Phlebotomist/Medical Assistant

THE POSITION

Under the supervision of the Rapid Results Program Manager and the Director of Nursing and Clinical Operations (for all clinical duties), the Rapid Results Medical Assistant/Patient Access Specialist will play a vital role in Men’s Health Foundation’s mission to arrest the spread of HIV/STDs in the community through their work in our express testing clinics. In this fast-paced and dynamic environment, the Medical Assistant/Patient Access Specialist will be key to keeping the clinic running efficiently and on time. The Medical Assistant/Patient Access Specialist will check in patients, verify insurance, answer questions about the clinic’s testing policies and procedures, and assist the nursing team on an as needed basis.

The Medical Assistant/Patient Access Specialist must be able to maintain both strong professional boundaries and a compassionate, sex-positive approach to clients. At MHF our goal is to educate clients so that they can make the best choices for their own lives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list may not include all assigned duties).

  • Greet patients when they arrive
  • Answer patient questions about testing procedures
  • Distribute electronic registration tablets to patients and explains how they work
  • Verify insurance information and collect co-pays, if required
  • Field phone calls and respond to emails
  • Prepare patients for examination by performing preliminary physical tests; taking blood pressure, weight, and temperature; reporting patient history summary or abnormal findings to providers
  • Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock; requesting refills as needed; verifying receipt.
  • Assure that examination and treatment rooms are properly stocked with equipment, disposable exam materials, etc. and ensure that each exam room is cleaned/disinfected and appropriately set up before each patient visit
  • Monitor clinic refrigerators and maintain temperature logs; notifies supervisor of any outlying temperatures
  • Prioritize infection control practices; uses sterile technique as appropriate.
  • Draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis and conducting rapid HIV testing
  • Secure patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records; complete diagnostic coding and procedure coding; keep patient information confidential
  • Maintain safe, secure, positive attitude and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations
  • Reinforce physician’s orders and answers questions regarding visit
  • Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshoot breakdowns; maintain supplies; perform preventive maintenance; report need for repairs
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications
  • Enhance practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
  • Maintain accurate and complete proper documentation for all patient encounters
  • Other duties may be assigned, as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Medical assistant certification and 2+ years’ experience in a fast-paced medical environment
  • 2-4 years of public health education or related field or related experience preferred
  • Phlebotomy certification
  • HIV counseling and testing experience, a plus
  • Working knowledge and/or experience working in public health or related field, including understanding of STDs, HIV preferred
  • Strong communication skills; works well in a team with a wide variety of people
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced, diverse environment
  • Understanding of HIPAA and the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Possess critical thinking ability and problem-solving skills
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish fluency) skills, preferred
  • Must take yearly flu vaccination or follow appropriate infection control measures during flu season and test for tuberculosis as required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Must consent to organization-wide testing for COVID-19 and adhere to all infection control measures to reduce the spread of COVID 19
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration statues, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.

COMPANY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to pass a background check to include a 7-year criminal, 10-year SSN & employer history reference check.
