Occupational Therapy Specialist

Providence is calling a Occupational Therapist II (Part time, Day shift) to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, CA.

We are seeking a Occupational Therapist II who will plan and implement specific treatment programs for individual patients according to the principles and practices of occupational therapy. Demonstrates proficiency in delivering care to assigned age-specific patient population (e.g., infants, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, and pediatrics), and participates in related continuing education. Functions as an interdisciplinary team member. Provides assistance to co-workers, patients, and visitors as needed.

In this position you will:

  • Maintain established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives as well as improving organization performance program, safety, environmental, and infection control programs and adherence to policies regarding such matters
  • Participate in the development of service operations, policies and procedures
  • Participate in the operations of the hospital and service area through participation in/on task forces, special projects, hospital wide education, or other activities that enhance operations
  • Function as a team member, contributing to the operations of the department on a day to day basis, and for the patient’s/customer’s overall general welfare and satisfaction
  • Float to areas within scope of practice as necessary. These include Acute/Inpatient, Acute Rehabilitation, Subacute Unit, and Outpatient
  • Demonstrate time management skills by achieving a productivity standard on average of 24 units of service in a 8-hour patient care shift or 3 – 3.5 units per hour. Prioritizes commitments and manages multiple tasks simultaneously. Demonstrates flexibility in work schedule when encountering unplanned events (e.g., cancellations, tests, etc.)
  • Assist the Occupational Therapy Supervisor in monitoring workflow and ensuring optimal unit productivity
  • Utilize appropriate resources when indicated to resolve conflicts, solve problems and achieve goals
  • Maintain knowledge of the provision of individualized age specific care. Interacts with adult, geriatric, adolescent, and pediatric patients taking into consideration the needs of each specific age group. Performs a complete evaluation including referring diagnosis, pertinent history, prior level of function, home/work/family situation, cognitive status, visual perception, pain level, and other subjective complaints, posture sensation, neurological signs, and special tests when appropriate, ROM, strength, coordination, daily living skills, and functional status
  • Establish occupational therapy goals, plan of treatment and rehab potential in conjunction with the patient, their support system, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to select the most appropriate program for individual patients, based on patient needs and capabilities. Formulates an appropriate discharge plan, re-evaluates the patient, and adjusts goals and plan when necessary
  • Implement treatment plan and demonstrates competency in procedures in occupational therapy as delineated by the California State Practice Guidelines including; functional daily living skills, therapeutic exercise, sensorimotor, educational, vocational, prosthetic/orthotic fabrication, fitting and training. Recognize indications/contraindications and normal/abnormal responses to treatment and modifies the treatment program appropriately as indicated
  • Supervise junior staff and support staff in specific treatment techniques within specialty area. Provides specialty consultation when requested
  • Complete all required documentation as required by departmental policies and procedures. Documentation is complete, thorough, legible, timely, and accurately reflect the treatment provided and the associated charges. Co-signs any and all documentation/notes completed by OTLA, and Rehab Aide staff as required by California Occupational Therapy Regulations and department policy and procedure
  • Provide training in Occupational Therapy treatment methods and techniques, and ensures optimal carry-over of treatment program with staff and family
  • Participate in educational programs and in-service meetings
  • Participate in patient care, departmental, and medical center meetings
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, professional affiliations, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops
  • Regular full-time/part-time staff is responsible for participating in the Rehabilitation Services student program
  • Regular full-time/part-time staff may have the following accountabilities may be reassigned:
  • Drive vehicle/hospital van to transport patients to and from the hospital for home evaluations and community integration activities

  • The following accountabilities for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) may be assigned:
  • Participate in NICU case conferences and discharge planning activities
  • Coordinate with a California Children’s Services (CCS) Case Manager for referral to a CCS-Paneled provider or CCS Medical Therapy Unit (MTU) for patients who may continue to require occupational therapy services after hospital discharge

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Current State licensure by the CA Board of Occupational Therapy/Department of Consumer Affairs
  • Current BLS-HCP – Basic Life Support – for Healthcare Providers – American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) – CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer accepted on hire until card expiration date

  • 3 years experience as an Occupational Therapist
  • Work experience in Physical Disabilities Setting
  • Experience in working with adolescents, adults, and geriatrics
  • Knowledge of clinical interventions/equipment necessary to meet needs of patient serviced
  • Good clinical skills
  • Good communication skills

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 1 year for NICU: Clinical experience in any setting providing occupational therapy to infants, children or adolescents or experience in an acute care hospital providing occupational therapy directly to infants, children or adolescents who have a CCS eligible medical condition
