As the Medical Director, you will work in a dyad model with the Executive Director to provide strategic leadership and oversight for the region. You will champion the essence of Blue Zones Health by inspiring, mentoring, and empowering providers, community leaders, and organizations to embrace lifestyle medicine and embed it into their care delivery. You will guide the adoption of innovative, community-oriented primary care models that focus on addressing the root causes of health inequities while fostering connection and purpose.
This role extends beyond the walls of healthcare centers—it’s about igniting change across the region. You will lead the development of a best-practices playbook to transform care delivery, serve as an ambassador for lifestyle medicine, and empower providers, regardless of their employment status, to bring these principles to life in their practices.

Schedule:
- This position requires working two half-days per week.
- Some evening work is required, including dinners and talks.

Key Responsibilities
Visionary Leadership and Inspiration
- Champion Transformation: Be the driving force behind a region-wide transformation to integrate lifestyle medicine principles across all providers, communities, and care settings.
- Inspire Providers: Engage and mentor providers, regardless of employment status, to adopt evidence-based lifestyle medicine practices that improve patient outcomes and well-being.
- Cultivate Collaboration: Build bridges between healthcare systems, community organizations, and leaders to foster a unified approach to health and wellness.
- Lead Change: Advocate for Blue Zones Health’s mission in all forums, inspiring a shared vision of health transformation rooted in lifestyle medicine.
Community-Oriented Primary Care
- Engage Communities: Lead initiatives to embed lifestyle medicine and community-oriented primary care into the region, ensuring health becomes a shared responsibility.
- Champion Community Emplacement: Partner with local leaders to create sustainable, community-driven health solutions that address social determinants of health.
- Collaborate with Innovators: Partner with organizations that emphasize community-driven health initiatives to build robust networks, empowering communities through education, improved access to resources, and integrated care solutions.
Developing a Playbook for Best Practices
- Set the Standard: Guide the development and dissemination of a regional best-practices playbook that serves as a blueprint for lifestyle medicine adoption and implementation.
- Foster Innovation: Pilot and refine transformative care models, ensuring they are scalable and replicable across diverse healthcare and community settings.
- Share Insights: Promote learnings and success stories regionally and nationally to position Blue Zones Health as a leader in healthcare innovation.
Clinical Leadership and Support
- Support Excellence: Oversee the clinical operations of Blue Zones Health Centers of Excellence and locally owned centers, ensuring alignment with the mission and vision of Blue Zones Health.
- Mentor and Guide: Provide mentorship and professional development for medical staff, empowering them to excel in delivering lifestyle medicine and patient-centered care.
- Elevate Care Standards: Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and drive continuous improvement in care quality and patient outcomes.
Advocacy and Engagement
- Be the Voice of Change: Represent Blue Zones Health in public forums, webinars, podcasts, and conferences, advocating for lifestyle medicine and community well-being.
- Collaborate with Professional Societies: Engage with medical societies, community organizations, and professional groups to amplify the mission of Blue Zones Health.
- Inspire the Next Generation: Lead education and training initiatives for providers, community leaders, and the public, embedding lifestyle medicine principles into the culture of care.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
KPIs for the Medical Director will be defined but are expected to include:
- Growth: Expansion of Blue Zones Health’s footprint and influence in the region.
- Profitability: Achieving financial targets while maintaining quality and equity of care.
- Lifestyle Medicine Uptake: Increasing the adoption of lifestyle medicine principles among providers and in patient care practices.
Qualifications
Required
- Medical degree (MD or DO) with board certification in a relevant specialty.
- Unrestricted medical license in the applicable state(s).
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical practice experience.
- Proven experience in medical leadership or healthcare transformation.
- Deep understanding of and commitment to lifestyle medicine principles.
- Exceptional ability to inspire, mentor, and lead diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage, motivate, and connect with varied audiences.
- Willingness to travel extensively within the region.
- Completion of the Arizona State University (ASU) course before starting the role.
- Attainment of American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) certification within the first year.
Preferred
- Board certification in Lifestyle Medicine.
- Demonstrated success in community health initiatives and public health innovation.
- Experience implementing or leading community-oriented primary care models.
- Proven track record of driving change and delivering measurable health improvements.
We are offering a competitive salary range of $230,00 to $260,000 for this position, based in California. Please note that candidates with extensive experience and a proven track record in the field will be eligible for the higher end of the salary spectrum.- Compensation: Salary will be prorated based on the actual time worked.
