Manager, Clinical Faculty

Reporting directly to the Campus Associate Dean of Nursing, Clinical Education and working closely with the Associate Deans of Academics and Administration, the Manager, Clinical Faculty is responsible for managing the hiring, onboarding, evaluation, and continued support for clinical faculty. Resolves conflicts / problems with faculty in the clinical setting in collaboration with clinical team. Collaborates with appropriate team leads to ensure they are provided with support and mentoring in the clinical setting for the Nursing program. Provides professional leadership and support for clinical faculty; serves as a mentor and facilitator for faculty assigned; and enables an environment which fosters creativity, responsiveness, and self-responsibility.

Faculty Support and Development (Training)

  • Responsible for the hiring, onboarding, oversight and supervision of clinical faculty/educators including creation of faculty development plans for all clinical faculty in collaboration with Campus Dean and Associate Deans of Nursing.
  • Responsible for implementing skills lab validation for all Clinical Faculty/Educators upon hire as well as a minimum of one annual skills lab validation.
  • Actively pursues support solutions for faculty who have demonstrated deficits, including a performance improvement plan.
  • Ensures clinical faculty provides periodic feedback of clinical performance immediately after observation event and/or of overall student performance at midterm and end of semester.
  • Must meet and maintain the qualifications and standards set forth by the state Board of Nursing for nursing faculty if required for assigned subject matter instruction.
  • Serves as the primary faculty, seeking input regarding student performance from Clinical Educators, (BSN prepared faculty extensions), but are ultimately responsible for evaluation of student outcomes. (Supports justification for CCNE Standard II-E and II-F).
  • Maintains clinical compliance health requirements (immunizations/titers) as needed to serve in the clinical faculty substitute role.
  • Conducts team lead meetings once a term at a minimum which includes the Associate Dean of Academics and Clinical Education to share successes, identify challenges, share pertinent clinical information from our clinical partners, and ensure the smooth delivery of instructional objectives.
  • Supports lead faculty during staff meetings to discuss any obstacles to fulfill lead faculty role.
  • Monitors and supports clinical faculty requirements to attend faculty meetings and other University initiatives to increase engagement.

Campus Facing (Administrative Focus)

  • Participates in the interview selection process for clinical faculty and educator candidates.
  • Coordinates a plan to best observe, instruct, and evaluate faculty performance which includes a direct observation clinical assessment of skills in applicable setting for related area of instruction.
  • Provides Associate Dean of Nursing, Clinical Education faculty (new and existing) evaluation/observations in accordance with department guidelines and takes appropriate action as necessary.
  • Responsible for reporting to the ADON Clinical the performance of assigned faculty, and as such, holds faculty members accountable for implementation of WCU best practices associated with the course and the program.
  • Attends Advisory meetings to network and derive solutions to mutual concerns.
  • Completes and submits all administrative assignments with high quality and in a timely manner.

Schedules

  • Confirms with Manager Clinical Operations the clinical faculty scheduling each term (prior to term start) and ensures that the faculty meets clinical site requirements.
  • Serves as a point of contact and assists Manager Clinical Operations for clinical faculty absences/vacation and coordinates substitute or alternative assignment with the nursing leadership team.
  • Responsible for scheduling clinical instructor training related to the program in collaboration with the ADON.

Clinical Partner Facing

  • In collaboration with the ADON Clinical, manages/maintains each clinical sites faculty and BRN course-specific requirements per state.
  • Attends hospital/site orientations to assist the site in newly hired faculty onboarding and annually if this is a site requirement.
  • Assesses and evaluates clinical sites to ensure students meet clinical objectives.
  • Works with Regional Director, Clinical Partnerships and Director of Career Services to identify strategic hiring opportunities that exist with service partners.
  • Strengthens relationships with facilities through regular contact with site personnel via faculty observations in collaboration with the entire clinical team.
  • Resolves conflicts / problems with faculty in the clinical setting in collaboration with clinical team.
  • Works with clinical affiliate staff to clarify policies and procedures specific to faculty requirements.
  • Provide feedback from faculty regarding clinical site to Manager Clinical Relations, Manager Clinical Operations and ADON, Clinical.
  • Coordinates and provides orientation to new faculty regarding clinical facilities.

General

  • Participates in professional development and organizations in order to maintain an understanding of current ideas, research and practices, attends meetings, workshops and seminars to enrich personal growth, knowledge and skill in management development.
  • Maintains professional appearance for position and serves as a role model, leader and mentor to the campus community.
  • Adheres to University policies and procedures and provides leadership to all staff through guidance and example.
  • Maintains regular and timely attendance, reports to work as scheduled and assures time worked and/or time-off is recorded properly.
  • Conducts job responsibilities in accordance with the standards set out in the Universitys Code of Ethical Conduct, Compliance Agreement, Sexual Harassment Policy or any of its policies and procedures, applicable federal and states laws, and applicable professional standards.
  • Maintains established department policies, procedures and attends in-services and other required meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all student, associate, and/or university information as required.
  • Exercises care, proper use and maintenance of department equipment and supplies and identifies unsafe conditions and makes appropriate adjustments.
  • Maintains order, cleanliness and safety at work.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Masters or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing, education or administration required.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Current unencumbered Registered Nurse License preferred.
  • Must meet and maintain the qualifications and standards set forth by any accrediting body that West Coast University is accredited by or in process of obtaining accreditation from, for area of expertise and expectations of faculty member as set forth in regulatory documents.
  • Eligible for approval for the role of Nursing Instructor in alignment with the states faculty approval guidelines (Boards of Registered Nursing), required.
  • Current certification in basic life support procedures including healthcare provider CPR with an Automated External Defibrillator.
  • Health certifications for an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Category I classified position (potential for exposure to infectious diseases at work). As an essential component of the West Coast University infection-control program immunizations and tuberculosis clearance documentation is required in accordance with current Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and OSHA recommendations and guidelines for Health-Care Personnel. Below are health certification details which are subject to change as required by OSHA and CDC.
  • Immunizations – based on the CDC Recommended Immunizations for Health-Care Personnel (HCP),all HCPs must submit documentation of immunization to Hepatitis B (HB) (series of three doses with anti- HBs serologic testing 1-2 months after dose #3), proof of immunity to Hepatitis B, or a signed declination; Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR); Varicella (chickenpox); and Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (booster every 10 years). Highly recommended immunizations for the HCP include COVID-19, Influenza (yearly), Hepatitis A, and Pneumonia. For some individuals, a titer test will be indicated vs. vaccinations. Titer tests showing immunity to listed pathogens are acceptable. Titer tests showing a negative response require appropriate immunizations and follow-up titers must be completed and submitted. If one or more of the listedimmunizations are contraindicated, documentation must be submitted clearly identifying the reason(s). Clinical laboratory reports with facility stamp and medical doctors signature are required.
  • Tuberculosis Clearance the CDC Guidelines for Preventing the Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Health-Care Settings are intended to protect the HCP and patients.
    • Two Options (consult with supervisor for specific program requirements)
      • (1)The TB screening program consists of two major components: (1) baseline single test for M. tuberculosis infection and (2) serial testing/screening for M. tuberculosis infection. The HCP must have a baseline single test followed by serial skin testing once per year. If the HCP has a baseline positive result or has previously had a positive result, a chest radiograph must be completed to exclude a diagnosis of TBdisease. Thereafter, every year the HCP must receive a symptom screen.
      • (2) The TB blood test (also called interferon-gamma release assays or IGRAs) measures how the immune system reacts to the bacteria that cause TB. An IGRA measures how strong a persons immune system reacts to TB bacteria by testing the persons blood in a laboratory. IGRAs are the preferred method of TB infection testing for people who have received bacille CalmetteGurin (BCG) as this is a vaccine for TB disease. There is no problem with repeated IGRAs. Two IGRAs are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are available in the United States: (1) QuantiFERONTB Gold In-Tube test (QFT-GIT) and (2) T-SPOT.TB test (T-Spot). Positive IGRA: This means that the HCP has been infected with TB bacteria. Additional tests are needed to determine if the HCP has latent TB infection or TB disease. A health care worker will then provide treatment as needed. Negative IGRA: This means that the HCPs blood did not react to the test and that latent TB infection or TB disease is not likely.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

  • Leadership knowledge in the program field to cultivate a learner-centered environment and to foster excellence.
  • Knowledge in technological support and delivery of program area and services.
  • Knowledge and evidence of strong supervisory and management skills as applicable to specialized program area.
  • Knowledge of state, federal and local laws/regulations relating to programs, governmental compliance and other regulatory standards such as Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) or other nursing accrediting agencies, WASC, and other accreditation standards.
  • Experience with MS Office.
  • Knowledge of applicable databases and computer application systems to supply the most accurate information, reports and projections.

Program specific requirements:

  • Completion of at least one years experience teaching courses related to nursing or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of medical community and established relationships with its professional members preferred.
  • One to two years prior experience working with or in clinical sites, placing students, and coordinating related documents preferred.
