The pay rate for this part time position is $42/hour. Hourly wage is based on experience and geographical location.

Bilingual Traveling Registered Nurses are responsible for:

  • Monitoring supplies and submitting requests for restocking
  • Obtaining informed consent and/or providing instructions, counseling, or referral services.
  • Collecting body, oscillometric and/or questionnaire measurements
  • Serving as back up for conducting spirometry, vision or audiometry measurements
  • Providing services to other staff as required to perform venipuncture on children and adult participants
  • Overseeing quality assurance and quality control of exam activities
  • Serving as lead for emergency response activities as well as Safety Officer for the MEC team
  • Consulting with participants regarding any out-of-range preliminary results
  • Reviewing laboratory results and provides referrals if needed following prescribed study protocol
  • Following the prescribed study protocol and mandated infection control guidelines
  • Overseeing the set up/pack up the examination room, including packing, unpacking, and storing light equipment and supplies
  • Recording all collected data in the computerized applications
  • Providing instruction to participants for self-collection of urine and swabs
  • Attending project training, complete RTI required courses and certification by end of training
  • Following all procedures in the Manual of Procedures
  • Managing and maintain equipment, tablet, and supplies properly
  • Providing all completed forms (e.g., consent forms, incentive receipts, timesheets) to supervisor, as requested
  • This position involves lifting equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • For MEC setup at the start of the location, the Registered Nurse is expected to assist the BMES and other team members with the placement, leveling and outside setup of the vehicles.  This includes assistance with expansion of the MECs,removal of the packed stairs and rails, assistance with placement and setup of the stair components, and placement of the floor covers. 
  • For MEC shutdown at the end of a location, the registered Nurse is expected to assist the BMES and other team members with the closeup of the MECs and packing of the MEC components.  This includes breakdown of the stair components, packing of the stair components and rails in the MECs, removal and storage of the floor covers, and assistance with closing up the expansion sides of the MECs.

RTI International is seeking part time Bilingual Traveling Registered Nurses on the NHANES Project

 

The Data Practice area within the Social, Statistical & Environmental Sciences (SSES) at RTI International has future openings for Traveling Registered Nurses for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

 

NHANES involves in-person household interviews and health examinations conducted in a Mobile Examination Center (MEC). As the lead of a small team of staff, the RN will have both administrative and data collection responsibilities. Administratively, the RN will be responsible for managing the MEC staff team to ensure coordinated the data collection activities for the day’s scheduled study participants. The RN will assure communication with the project headquarters and function as the MEC safety officer, leading any medical emergency response activities.  

 

With the support of all team MEC team members, the RN leads quality assurance activities regarding MEC exam. Data collection responsibilities may include obtaining informed consent, collecting body and oscillometric  measurements, completing phlebotomy procedures and collecting other biospecimen samples from adult and children participant, conducting interviews.  The RN may also be the back up for collecting spirometry, vision or audiometry measurements.  

 

Successful candidates will have good communication skills, particularly with children and parents, and computer experience. This position requires full-time continuous travel for up to 38 weeks a year, with the potential for more. Candidates must be available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week while on travel, including evenings and weekends and be willing to commit to work for at least 1 year. You will attend project training and be supervised by a MEC Task Leader.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Fluency in English and Spanish
  • Associate’s degree and minimum of 5 years of nursing experience in both direct patient care, and supervisory experience
  • Possess current nursing license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (one of the 50 states or District of Columbia)
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses 
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy on persons from infancy and older
  • CPR certification or willingness to obtain CPR certification within the first 3 months of employment
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses 
  • Knowledge of standard nursing and phlebotomy safety procedures
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relations with all study participants
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English, particularly with children and parents
  • Basic computer proficiency (accessing internet and various project applications) and clerical skills
  • Good organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to be flexible in working assigned tasks
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Must possess a valid drivers license

Preferred Qualifications for Ideal Candidates:

  • Master’s degree in Nursing preferred
  • Willingness to be trained and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for driving the MEC vehicles (38 feet in length and over 26,000 lbs. in weight) to various study locations. 
  • The initial data collection period is expected to be two years, from January 2025 through December 2026 and anticipated to continue at least until 2030.
  • On average, you will be on duty 40 hours per week for up to 38 weeks per year.
  • On average, you will be on duty 5 days each week based on the survey participant schedule.
  • The majority of this work is anticipated to be weekdays during daytime hours. between 7AM and 7PM driven by the data collection schedule. Staff are informed of the upcoming week’s schedule each Thursday.

Bilingual Traveling Registered Nurses are required to complete all trainings which include:

 

  • Successfully pass project required trainings (a mix of virtual, online, and in-person.)
    • Virtual and Online trainings completed throughout prior to in-person training.
    • In-person training dates in Research Triangle Park, NC.
    • Refresher and mid-year trainings are expected.
  • Attendance at all trainings is mandatory.
    • Up to 80 hours of paid online/virtual training.
    • In-person training for up to 8 hours/day will be paid.
    • Travel per diem and accommodations will be covered for in-person training.
