The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of the University of Southern California (USC) and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in the Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) in the Division of Anesthesiology, are actively seeking a full time faculty member for the position of Division of Anesthesiology Chief.

CHLA is a major pediatric teaching hospital and is home to The Saban Research Institute, among the largest and most productive children’s research facilities in the western United States.

CHLA has been affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of the University of Southern California (USC) since 1932.

The core pillars of research strength in ACCM currently are in respiratory physiology, informatics, outcomes and participation in multicenter clinical trials (primarily in the ICUs).

CHLA is home to The Saban Research Institute (TSRI) where scientific inquiry is combined with clinical care devoted exclusively to children.

Investigators at TSRI conduct basic, translational and clinical research, and are involved in collaborative projects with academic institutions worldwide.

Two research buildings on the main campus comprise over 215,000 square feet for wet lab and dry lab research activities.

TSRI and CHLA maintain strong scientific and strategic alliances with USC and KSOM, where our physicians and scientists hold faculty appointments.

One of the most notable collaborations is the The Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute (SC CTSI).

It was initially funded in 2008 with an NIH award, made jointly to USC and CHLA, provides critical resources to help advance cutting-edge research and scientific breakthroughs in patient and community health, with a special focus on diverse and vulnerable populations.

SC CTSI has supported more than 800 investigators and nurtured research at USC and CHLA, successfully building interdisciplinary teams, advancing drug and device development, supporting clinical trials, engaging diverse communities in research, and training clinical and translational researchers.

Its efforts have contributed more than $90M in new extramural funding, more than 500 scientific publications, more than 80 patent applications and three start-ups, in addition to tangible health improvements in surrounding communities.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine provides the following clinical services:
Anesthesiology and sedation services for the main operating room, ambulatory surgery center, radiology, cardiology, catheterization lab, and locations away from the main hospital campus, Critical care medicine for the 24-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), the 24-bed cardiothoracic intensive care unit (CTICU), Level I trauma unit, procedural sedation, and offsite PICU locations Acute, post-op and chronic pain management services, including non-pharmacologic treatments such as dog therapy, acupuncture, biofeedback, etc.

Palliative care and other comfort services providing physical, emotional, physical and spiritual support to children and teens with life threatening illnesses, and their families.

Current clinical providers include approximately 38 FTE anesthesiologists and 22 FTE critical care medicine physicians. 

The department operates the largest training program at CHLA, teaching nearly 250 trainees per year including residents, student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA), and anesthesia technicians who rotate from other schools (USC, UCLA, Kaiser, and others). 

Programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) include:
Critical care (15 fellows) Pediatric anesthesiology (10 to 12 fellows) Palliative care (1 fellow).

Non-ACGME-accredited programs include:
Cardiac critical care (2 fellows) Pain management (1 to 2 fellows) Cardiac anesthesia (1 to 2 fellows).

Position Description

We are seeking an accomplished clinician scientist to lead and cultivate the academic development and productivity of the Division of Anesthesiology.

The ideal candidate will be a pediatric anesthesiologist with an accomplished clinical research record of extramural funding and publication.

This position will involve faculty development and mentoring, and close collaboration with ongoing investigative programs in ACCM and across CHLA.

This is a new role designed specifically to promote academic success and professional development for our faculty and fellows, as the clinical operations of the operating rooms and other anesthetizing locations is well managed now by our Clinical Director of Anesthesiology.

Specific leadership responsibilities will entail:
Creates a positive work environment for the division.

Provide guidance and mentorship for physicians and trainees to support a culture of professionalism and effective communication within the division and department.

Build a strong partnership with other division leaders, both internal and external to ACCM, to collaborate with physician leaders on clinical activities Monitors and understands the local and national forces shaping healthcare in the US and how these forces may influence the future of the discipline.

Identifies opportunities for growth of the department’s and division’s clinical, research, and educational programs.

Provides guidance and participates in implementation of growth plans, including monitoring progress and performance in achieving objectives.

Actively participate in departmental and division fundraising activities and represent the division at events.

Assist Department Chair in addressing clinical, service, process and behavioral complaints directly with division and affected faculty, escalating to the Department Chair as needed.

Ensure divisional faculty compliance with clinical practice billing and documentation rules and regulations.

Develop and participate in annual departmental budget, collaborating with the Department Chair, department management team, medical group and hospital.

Effectively operationalize financial strategic plan goals and priorities of department.

Coordinates all educational activities for anesthesiology (in collaboration with education/fellowship services of the department).

Responsible for the administrative development and conduct of cooperative group and institutional research programs for pediatric anesthesia (in collaboration with the research services of the department).

Lead and participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities for the division in partnership with our QA/QI teams.

Delivers thoughtful, accurate and timely academic and performance evaluations for division faculty in accordance with required procedures and timelines.

Leads recruitment for department faculty; responsible for recommending faculty appointment, reappointment and academic promotions.When requested, assists with recruitment of key faculty for other departments, hospital, and medical group staff.
