Sr.

Manager, Thermal Mechanical Engineering The Role As the Senior Manager in the Thermal Mechanical Engineering department in the Data Center and GPU Accelerated Processing (DCGAP), you will be responsible for the thermal and mechanical design and development, process development, and execution of our Data Center GPU products.

To accomplish this, you will need to interact with other key engineering teams such as silicon design, boarding engineering, validation, and manufacturing as well as and leaders within AMD, our customers, and our partners.

The Person The Senior Manager of Thermal Mechanical Engineering will have broad managerial/technical leadership skills, communication skills, planning skills, and critical problem-solving skills.

They will be market savvy and comfortable in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment.

Key Responsibilities The Senior Manager of Thermal Mechanical Engineering will be responsible for developing and leading a team of approximately 10 engineers in a highly focused global engineering team based in Austin, Texas.

The successful candidate will have a thermal or mechanical development background focusing on the integration of silicon devices into products and work as part of a global team in delivering commercially viable products to the marketplace in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The Senior Manager will manage work assignments and coordinate results with a cross functional team, as well as developing key relationships with OEM/ODM customers.

The successful candidate will have a thermal or mechanical engineering development background and work as part of a global team in delivering commercially viable products (silicon to systems) to the marketplace in a timely and cost-effective manner.

In addition, at a technical level the person will be able to direct technical work within the team as well as mentor and develop employees within the team.

The position includes focusing on the technology development and productization of new product architectures and features, packaging technologies, and power regulation solutions at a board and system level for AMD’s products.

Specific pre-silicon work would include activities such as thermal feature/architecture definition and design, package technology development, thermal modeling, and system development for specific AMD markets.

Specific post-silicon work includes test planning and creation, characterization, data analysis, and customer/reference system design and characterization.

This role requires considerable use of initiative and independent judgment.

The selected candidate will have the ability to influence and effectively communicate their vision throughout the organization.

They will be a driver of continuous improvement and new ways of thinking by promoting new ideas/perspectives around thermal/mechanical design, architectures, and product definition.

The Following Defines Successful Performance Criteria For The Position Commercialization – The Senior Manager will bring together hardware, software, product development and manufacturing activities to deliver commercially-viable products/platforms to the marketplace in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The position will drive engineering work that spans abroad timeline from innovative technology development to productization.

Engineering Management – This individual will lead a highly technical team in a ‘hands-on’ manner to execute the product development plan, including regularly reviewing progress, adjusting resource usage, pro-actively managing employee performance and recommending initiation of new process improvements.

Planning and Execution – The role will be expected to review, summarize, and regularly update the product development execution plan for the team as well as budget of the group in concert with the program management resources within the organization.

This individual is expected to have demonstrated excellent planning skills and program management skills in a fast-paced multi-project environment.

Continuous Improvement – The role will be expected to constantly drive process improvements while executing fast time-to-market on products.

Key metrics will show progress and enable setting of targets.

Performance metrics and process improvements will be utilized to drive continuous improvements.

Recruiting – The successful candidate will be responsible for recruiting and hiring engineering and technical staff to help grow and formalize his/her organizational effectiveness.

Preferred Experience The Senior Manager of the Thermal Mechanical Engineering team must have demonstrated the ability to be a constant force for innovation and improvement throughout their career.

The successful candidate must have experience leading junior to senior-level engineers and will play a pivotal role in empowering and strengthening the core values of this team.

Our selected candidate will use his/her proven leadership and architecture skills to ensure the engineering team continuously innovates, uses ‘best practices’ and adds value for its customers.

Critical Experiences & Competencies For Success Management/Technical Leadership Experience
– At least ten (10) years of technical management or technical subject matter leadership experience in a large, fast paced environment.

Other experiences should include demonstrated accomplishments in growing, mentoring junior engineers, providing technical and career guidance, and ultimately building fully functional leadership teams.

Project management of multiple technically diverse programs in parallel is required.

Technical Experience
– Solid understanding of thermal design and thermal analysis.

Semiconductor device physics knowledge is a plus.

The selected candidates should understand and be proficient in the development of thermal/mechanical solutions at the silicon, package, and system-level for semi-conductor products; data analysis and characterization, optimization of packaging for increased quality and cost improvement of high-end semiconductor products such as microprocessors.

Academic Credentials BS 10 years in Mechanical Engineering or applied physics is preferred.

Any specialization in related field is advantageous.
