Mechanical Engineer

At Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences.

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test future consumer VR and AR experiences.

As part of our team, you will develop state-of-the-art mechanical structures, mechanisms, and solutions for next generation prototypes.

You will become part of a team chartered with the exploration of new concepts through analytical modeling and fast iterative prototyping.

A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, firmware, and software techniques.

We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, are able to drive a concept into a prototype, and can envision how a prototype could transition into a high-volume consumer product.

The chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities Drive mechanical engineering activities in a highly cross-functional team environment Drive tech roadmaps in collaboration with research scientists Explore and pursue new designs that move the state-of-the-art forward in focused research areas Incubate new technologies into research prototypes Establish and refine product design process, best practices, and/or tools for the organization Minimum Qualifications BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience 5 years of experience working on mechanical engineering designs in collaborative, cross functional environments Experience leading technical teams and cross-functional groups Experience in 3D design modeling (SolidWorks or NX) and PDM (Teamcenter) and physical prototyping Experience with component/system level modeling and optimization DOE and DFSS Preferred Qualifications Experience in mass production of systems requiring a variety of manufacturing processes: soft goods, active optical alignment, multishot/insert molding, machining 10 years of experience in developing complex mechanical systems that integrate new technologies across multiple platforms and chasses Experience with integrating component modules (AMOLED displays, batteries, camera modules, etc.), interconnect (FPC design and ACF bonding), and/or Integration of wireless antenna (GSM, GPS, Wifi, LTE) into mechanical enclosures Familiarity with VR/AR systems, wearable devices, biosensors, or equivalent Has multiple ME discipline experience that cuts across divergent technologies
