Incumbents may perform duties related to residential, commercial, and industrial wiring.Essential Job FunctionsThe following are the position responsibilities:* Performs skilled professional work in the installation, maintenance, alteration, and repair of wiring, electrical appliances, machinery, branch circuits, underground and pole line distribution, switchboards, transformers, rigging, operating a bucket truck or similar equipment, and handling of heavy equipment.* Lays out, assembles, installs, tests, and maintains electrical devices and apparatus such as boxes, conduit, wiring outlets, distribution panels, main electrical service, and bus bars; tests circuits for continuity and proper connections.* Uses standard and specialized electrical devices or equipment such as voltmeter, amp meter, ohmmeter, megohm meter, and other hand tools.* Installs high voltage distribution transformers and makes internal connections to adjust to the required voltage.* Installs high voltage underground and overhead cables.* Repairs and maintains switchboards and related control devices.* Maintains tools and equipment in good working condition.* Maintains records of work performed and prepares reports as required.* Supervises apprentices or helpers as needed.* Drives automotive equipment to work and from sites that may include combination truck units with trailers of 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or over.RequirementsThe Minimum Requirements to qualify for Electrician exam can either be:Option I: Completion of a recognized Electrician Apprentice training program of at least four (4) years duration* -OR-Option II: Five (5) years of experience in the installation, alteration and repair of commercial and industrial electrical wiring systems and equipment, one (1) year of which must have been at the journey-level.License:A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. A valid California Class A or B Driver License may be required for appointment to some positions in this class.A City of Los Angeles Regulation 4 Certificate may be required for testing Life/Safety systems in County buildings located within the city limits of Los Angeles. Life/Safety systems are defined as: fire alarms, automatic-closing fire assemblies, elevator recall, fire suppression, and emergency power systems.Special License Requirement Information:Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.Other Requirements:Vision: Keen color perception.Special Requirement Information:* In order to qualify under Option I, you must attach a legible copy of your electrician apprentice training program certificate to your application at the time of filing or within 15 calendar days from application submission to Annie Wong at awong@hr.lacounty.gov. Please ensure the certificate clearly show your name, name of issuing agency, title of apprenticeship training program, date issued, and date of expiration. Applications submitted without the required documentation will be considered incomplete if not received within the required period. The original certificate MUST be presented during the selection process and/or prior to appointment. Recognized Electrician Apprentice Training Certificates will be verified through the appropriate Electrician Union(s).Journey-level electricians in the County of Los Angeles is defined as work requiring extensive knowledge of the craft such as professional electrical installation, maintenance and alteration of electrical systems and equipment. Please ensure the application contains detailed information specifically addressing journey-level experience, educational background, and/or specialized training courses/programs completed. Also, the required technical experience can be a combination of County and/or outside experience.Physical Class:3 – Moderate. Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.Out-of-Class Experience:Los Angeles County employees claiming out-of-class experience will be considered.Additional InformationOur Assessment Process:Once we determined that you meet the requirements, we will invite you to participate in two (2) multiple choice tests weighted 100% measuring Thoroughness, Mechanical Comprehension, Achievement, Safety Orientation, Responsibility, Teamwork, Job/Technical & Tool Knowledge, Data Analysis & Decision-Making, Written Expression and Reading Comprehension.THE MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.Applicants must meet the minimum requirements and achieve a combined passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.Transfer of Scores:Applicants that have taken identical test part(s) for this or any other exam within the last 12 months will have their test responses for the identical test part(s) automatically transferred to this examination. This examination contains test parts that may be used in the future for new examinations. Upon acceptance of your application, your test responses may be transferred to the new examination, and you may not be allowed to retake any identical test part(s) for at least 12 months. Depending on the new examination content, your transferred test responses may not result in the same score.Invitation letters to the multiple choice test will be sent electronically to the email address provided on the application.
