If you are a skilled CAD professional with experience in tooling and automation design looking for a place where you can apply both your CAD skills and your creativity to address design and manufacturability issues in a fast paced Aerospace engineering and manufacturing environment, keep reading.
As a member of our CAD and Tooling design team, you will have the opportunity to work on projects covering the entire range of Spectrolabs products: everything from large and small solar panels and arrays for a variety of space applications to photolithography tooling used to fabricate the worlds most efficient space solar cells to airborne searchlight, gimbal systems and ground-based high-intensity illuminated test systems.
You will also have the opportunity to directly contribute to development programs and to help shape our next-generation improvements in product, process and tooling design.

Primary Responsibilities:Design solar panels, solar panel sub-assemblies and components, and solar wing harnessing in AutoCAD / Inventor Pro Suite.
Also design and update searchlight/gimbal systems and high intensity illumination products for solar cell and solar panel test in AutoCAD / Inventor Pro Suite.Work with Product and Process Engineers to identify and define the production flow and manufacturing support tooling necessary to safely and efficiently build and test the hardware in conformance with customer requirements.Generate piece part, sub-assembly, component and tooling procurement drawings and assembly drawings and models using AutoCAD/Inventor Pro Suite.Assess customer ICDs for manufacturability and provide feedback/improvement suggestions to enhance compliance and/or manufacturability.Use your GD& T skills and production support experience to support proposal and design trades and manufacturability improvement projects by providing rapid assessment of potential design options, supplier capabilities and production approaches.Work with Panel Product Engineers to translate customer schematics and specifications into achievable manufacturing plans, inclusive of part procurement drawings, sub-assembly drawings, and manufacturing efficient panel layouts and detailed manufacturing drawings, inclusive of Bill of Materials (BOMs), detail views, wiring lists, schematics, and notes.Work with Illuminations Systems Product Engineers to generate and update part and assembly documentation needed for procurement, manufacturing and assembly, including generation of 3D models and model management in VAULT.Work with internal, customer, and supplier engineering teams to verify model tolerances and dimensional call-outs on drawings to assure manufacturability for internally built assemblies and to help resolve procurement and cost of quality issues for both Space Photovoltaic and Illuminations Product lines.Advance ideas for streamlining both design/documentation and manufacturing processes by applying DFMAT principles to all generated and reviewed deliverable hardware and manufacturing/support tool designs.Evaluate automated solutions and the necessary support tooling and software to implement in productionParticipate in round-table drawing reviews and CAD-check of drawings and tooling designs generated by others.Adapt to meet changing priorities in support of manufacturing, engineering, and marketing needs.Communicate effectively with a diverse group of both internal and external customers and colleagues.Must be adept at working in a fast paced environment to complete scheduled milestones as planned.Must be flexible, able to support evening and weekend work on an as needed basis, and self-motivated.
The ideal candidate will also be a motivated self-starter with experience and skills to take on additional responsibilities, such as:Investigates and develops complex equipment and tooling concepts and specifications to satisfy aerospace product design and build requirements.
Participates in design reviews, collects design requirements, creates and revises drawings and models, researches the application of robotics, automation and new technology to support the build plan.
Creates off-load packages, specifications, purchase requests and usage instructions for equipment and tooling.
Checks designs for compliance with safety, producibility, maintainability, reliability, ergonomic factors and regulatory requirements.
Develops and documents equipment and tooling inspection and usage instructions, preventative maintenance plans, and user training.
Provides technical support for engineering changes and discrepancies by investigating problems and analyzing data to identify solutions.
Maintains hardware and software configuration.
Assesses and makes recommendations for disposition of equipment and tooling.Participates in the creation of visual process instructions and build documentationContributes to improvement initiatives impacting both design and manufacturing processes The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a US Person as defined by 22 C.F.R.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience): CAD design certification or Associates Degree + 3 or more years relevant experience in a production support or direct to manufacture design environment.3+ years experienced in 2D AutoCAD and 3D Inventor (layer control, block parts, detail views, etc)1+ years experience utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD& T) principles for evaluating manufacturing tolerances and dimensional stack-upsExperienced in design and tooling support for a manufacturing environment; coordinating as needed with manufacturing technicians and other engineers to implement design and manufacturability improvementsExperience in reading and generating electrical schematicsExperience compiling and presenting data in MS Excel, Word, PowerPointMust be flexible, able to support evening and weekend work on an as needed basis, and self-motivated.Must be adept at working in a fast paced environment to complete scheduled milestones as planned.
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills & Experience):GD& T Certification Experience with rapid prototyping via 3D print, WEDM, or other quick evaluation manufacturing technologiesPrior experience in design and implementation of Automated Systems (inclusive of tooling and programming considerations)Working with suppliers and engineers to evaluate material and component selection for both product and tooling design Use of Autodesk VAULT or similar PDM system Hands-on experience with drills, lathes, CNC, or other machine shop equipmentDesigning tooling for precision manufacturing and / or large structure handling supportExperience with Printed Circuit Board (PCB)/Printed Wiring Board (PWB)/Flex Circuits or other electronics packaging and wiring designKnowledge of VBA, video editing, illustrations / graphic design and translating between AutoCAD/Inventor and other CAD systems (such as NX or Catia).Experience in DFMAT, IAW, 3P, or other LEAN manufacturability improvement activitiesFamiliarity with the basic physics of solar cells, photolithographic processes, Aerospace materials and assembly techniques, and a background in mechanical engineering, industrial design and/or material science.Familiarity with FEA and FMECA analysis techniques, SQL, Labview, C/C+/C++, Python or similar electronics/motion control command & control software programming languages, while not strictly required for this position, are also strongly desired extra qualifications.
