Our Finish Carpenters have highly advanced interior and exterior carpentry skills and a demonstrated ability to execute work within very tight tolerances. They have an aptitude for providing creative constructability solutions to a variety of design challenges and are key to executing the high-quality work that Dowbuilt is known for.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Read and interpret architectural and shop drawings
- Manage building layout & dimensional control, proficient with use of builder’s level
- Establish clarity around deadlines, ensuring that any slipping deadlines are identified early, and new deadlines are communicated to the Foreman and Superintendent
- Prepare and execute the daily work plan
- Work and plan with subcontractors to make sure the project is ready for them to begin work each day
- Help fellow carpenters put new work into place, from framing to finish
- Work with Superintendent to order materials
- Evaluate cabinet, door and window details, and shop drawings
- Provide mentoring and coaching to fellow Carpenters, Apprentice Carpenters and Laborers
- Identify when other workers or subcontractors are not working in a safe manner and report unsafe practices to the Foreman or Superintendent
Qualifications and Skills
Expected Competencies of a Finish Carpenter with at least Five (5) years of Experience:
- Understands the basics of hanging doors & setting windows
- Understands waterproofing; how to properly flash exterior doors and windows
- Thorough understanding of structural framing details. This helps with remodels
- Trim installation. This includes trim around doors, windows, base, base shoe, and crown molding
- Familiar with coping techniques for base & crown
- Familiar with scribing techniques for cabinetry & other trim work
- Ability to mill materials to exact dimensions
- Ability to cut tapers in trim boards when walls are out of plumb
- Familiar with making jigs for routering door and cabinet hardware
- Familiar with cabinetry and casework installation
- Must have full understanding and working knowledge of tools required to perform high level carpentry
Expected Competencies of a Finish Carpenter with 10 to 15 years of Experience:
- Trim work in either paint grade or stain grade material is tight with no gaps
- Crown molding install at various wall angles with coped or mitered joinery
- Base coping expert
- Paneling fabrication & install
- Expert at dimensioning lumber to exact size – even tapered pieces of trim
- Familiar with some stair work including handrails and skirt boards
- Satisfactory math skills figuring out angles & pitches for roofs, stairs and railings
- Ability to hang doors efficiently with dead even reveals on 3 sides
- Customize doors to correct size and configuration including gluing up to 2-3 piece moving wall type doors
- Ability to hang blank doors from scratch
- Familiar with mortising & installing door hardware
- Must have glue up joinery skills for shelving, table or bench tops
- Familiar with sharpening techniques for chisels & plane blades. Keep edge tools sharp
- Skilled and efficient cabinet installer. Scribed joints in cabinetry and other casework is tight
