Job Details: CORPORATE BANKING DIVISION CREDIT MANAGER 

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

The Division Credit Manager is responsible for leading the implementation and administration of City National Bank’s Credit policies, procedures and processes within the newly established National Corporate Banking Division. This key position is responsible for oversight of the division Credit team providing leadership and vision in support of the Division’s business objectives. Responsible for reviewing, modifying, enhancing and standardizing complex credit policies and credit processes within the division to ensure continuous alignment with the Bank’s credit risk tolerance, policies and procedures. The Division Credit Manager will directly manage and supervise the Credit staff and will report to the Head of National Corporate Banking. 

The Division Credit Manager will provide leadership in the creation and implementation of a cohesive and consistent credit culture, ensuring consistency in credit philosophy, underwriting, review and field credit office procedures. Builds and supports effective partnerships and communication between the Credit team and the Relationship Managers, Team Leads, Managers and Regional Managers. Responsible for evaluating and recommending approving or declining credit requests to Credit Administration within their authority in order to ensure the quality of the division credit portfolios remain consistent with the Bank’s goals and standards. Reviews loan structures to ensure that acceptable credit standards are maintained and that all loans conform to established company policy. Continuously monitors and evaluates new and existing credits/portfolios for potential risks and exposure. Acts as the primary interface for the Division with internal Credit Risk Review and outside regulatory parties. Is the technical expert and may structure credits on large, complex loans. Actively participates in the Division Risk Committee meetings and contributes to the development of the risk framework used in writing Heightened Standards.  Coordinates and reviews reports submitted to various internal credit related committees such as PARC, PARM and Credit Policy Committee. Is a Subject Matter Expert in AIRB Risk Rating and Risk Criteria Papers and gives guidance on the application of these job aids. Actively engaged with semi-annual Portfolio Review meetings for each Region in the Division to ensure that the content of these meetings are meeting the standards required by Credit Administration. The Division Credit Manager will support the growth objectives of the Division in a manner consistent with the credit culture, philosophy and underwriting standards of City National Bank.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Management of Team?Lead, build and develop a talented and creative team with sufficient knowledge, skills, experience and positive work habits to support successful delivery of the company’s credit strategies in support of Division goals. ?Ensure effective partnership between the Credit staff and the Relationship Managers, Team Leads, Managers and Regional Managers to develop and maintain positive and productive relationships. ?Develop and coach colleagues to achieve individual and team objectives. Identifies staff development needs and provides training and growth opportunities. Shares and engages direct reports in the CNB vision and goals.?Effectively partners with key constituents and constituencies to be recognized as a team player and collaborative?Serve as the bank’s spokesperson as required to security investment analysts, regulators and others regarding the Bank’s loan quality and lending activities
  • Credit Underwriting ?Oversees the division credit underwriting and approval process to ensure quality, consistency and compliance with the Division’s and Bank’s underwriting standards.?Evaluates and examines credit requests in order to assess credit worthiness including loan quality, credit risk classification, loan structure, collateral analysis, pricing and adherence to Bank policies. Approves or declines credit requests within assigned authority (up to $xx million). Analyzes and recommends approval/disapproval of credit requests which exceed assigned authority.?Reviews financial spreads and associated financial statements and notes, credit documentation and structure, commitments, etc. for the purpose of risk rating loans, determining the degree of attention required, identifying potential credit problems and ensuring conformity to company lending policies and practices. Recommends actions to prevent potential loss.?Proactively maintains strong communication ties with Credit Managers, Underwriters, Credit Analysts, Relationship Team Leads, Managers and Regional Managers on credit matters and loans, including presentations within the division or within the Bank on recommendations of extensions, renewals and commitments based on industry research and analysis, credit structure, pricing and management assessment.
  • Portfolio Monitoring/Management?Responsible for the oversight of the loan portfolio management process to ensure consistency within the Division.?Monitors and evaluates the credit quality of new and existing loans and interfaces with Credit Administration to discuss deal structure, status of Credit Reviews and other follow up items as needed.?Oversees loan activities which include the review of reports (e.g., Loan Activity Reports, Past Due Reports, Trial Balances) for unusual transactions and appropriate loan grades, timely submission of financial statements, borrowing base, compliance certificates and compliance with financial covenants and address violations (waiver, forbearance, default letters).?Ensures that all credit files are kept current with latest financial statements, agency reports, etc. ?Manage bad debt exposure and expenses, through the direct management of credit terms and conditions.
  • Administration?Oversees the preparation for and participation in federal examinations, independent audits and all internal audits.?Provides representation for the Division on the credit policy committee and other committees as appropriate.?Responsible for the development of all key credit quality metrics and the entire credit flow process.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Must-Have*

  • Bachelor’s Degree Finance, Accounting, Business or related field
  • Ten years of progressively increasing Commercial and Industrial loan underwriting experience
  • Five years of management experience in underwriting or credit management
  • Five years structuring credit and managing large complex credit transactions for companies with greater than $20 million in revenue
  • Five years of credit staff management or supervisory experience.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in structuring credits/loans
  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to motivate build and develop a strong team.
  • Strong knowledge of credit, accounting, credit policy and financial statement analysis
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent ability to analyze credits, as well as a detailed knowledge of lending structure and cash flow analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present clear and precise recommendations based upon analysis for action on loans.
  • Excellent skills of motivating staff and assisting in the creation and achievement of individual and team goals. Willingness and ability to communicate with staff so that everyone feels informed at all times. Perception as a trusted advisor by both the staff and the client. Strong strategic skills that will assist the staff in creating strategies for each client.
