The Center will create and support collaborative and transformative activities in service of the College’s mission and DEI values designed to break new ground through practice, scholarship and pedagogy.

In addition, the Center will partner with Senior Leadership to ensure that DEI programs, practices, and policies align with the College’s strategic plan, workplace values, and mission.nn nnJob Summarynn nnThe Associate Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion ( AVPDEI ) is the administrative position responsible for the Center for DEI and will act as a cultural change agent.

Reporting directly to the President and serving as an integral member on the Senior Team, this role is responsible for advising, developing, coordinating, collaborating, and administering and/or implementing a variety of duties related to DEI for the College and within the fields of art and design.

This may include research, program development, best practices, policy creation, new initiatives, and activities that demonstrate the College’s commitment to being a truly welcoming, inclusive and supportive work and student environment, and institutional culture for all individuals from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, ages, nationalities, social and economic statuses, sexual orientations, gender identities/expressions, religions, ideological perspectives, and physical and mental abilities.

The AVPDEI will partner primarily with the President and Human Resources and Development and along with College administrators, the campus community, and external partners to foster and enhance the College’s vision, branding and reputation, and strategic goals related to DEI .nn nn Location nn nnEssential FunctionsnProgramsnn nn
• Serve as a visionary and strategic partner with College administrators for a variety of programming and outreach efforts to maintain a diverse student body—examples include fundraising activities, community outreach inside and outside of the College, student recruitment programs, scholarship opportunities for underserved students, bridge programs, and programming and support services for first generation students to create pathways to enter Otis and employee resource groups (ERGs)n
• Work with Academic Affairs to formulate and implement policies that affirm Otis’s commitment to an equitable and creative teaching and learning environment to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and to showcase best practices internationally in promoting and celebrating diversity in the fields of art and designn
• Provide partnership to the Extension Program, create innovative programs serving economically challenged communities, communities of color, and marginalized individuals through work related to advocacy and social innovation projects that provide cutting edge thought leadership and advocacy for cultural equityn
• Work with the Provost and academic leaders on DEI matters in policies and programs that focus on curriculum development, academic and co-curricular programming, including coordinating guest speakers, lecturers and community leaders where relevant to enhance the educational experience; create fellowships that recruit a diverse group of faculty and guest artists and designers to deepen the DEI conversation relative to art and design, related pedagogy, career preparation, and curricular contentn
• Serve as a global resource through possible exhibitions, seminars, and/or colloquia (both within Otis, with fellow AICAD schools, and with the larger community) to focus on topics concerning DEI in art and designn
• Co-chair the DEI Council with the VP, Human Resources and Development to develop DEI programs, initiatives, and activities designed to foster a climate of respect, tolerance, and civility such as community dialogues, forums, coordinating events, and guest speakers; work with the Council to shape the College’s definitions of diversity and inclusion and to develop the College’s value statement on diversity and inclusionn
• Serve as a resource and/or regularly attend meetings to engage in conversations with various shared governance/conferral groups about DEI , such as Academic councils and committees, Otis Student Union, Staff Council, etc., in order to factor input into proposed DEI programs, activities and initiativesn
• Consult, upon request, with students, faculty and staff on learning and working productively and effectively in a diverse communityn
• Partner with Academic Affairs and Human Resources to develop strategies to promote DEI in faculty and staff hiring and compensation programs and practicesn
• Develop and deliver training on DEI programs, including bias, sensitivity and cultural competency; coordinate these activities in partnership with Human Resources, Academic Affairs and Student Affairs; may serve in faculty positions in accordance with Otis’s Staff Teaching policy and as deemed appropriate by the President, Provost and Department Chair(s) to enhance DEI efforts, learning and programmingn
• Develop and implement climate surveys and partner with Human Resources, Academic Affairs, and Student Affairs to execute them; communicate the results to the Senior Team, campus community and other stakeholders; provide leadership for improvements and programs based on findingsn
• Partner with the Vice President of Communications and Marketing to build a (internal and external) communications strategy reflecting DEI programming at the College including effective use of images and messagingn
• Conduct periodic reviews to assess success of DEI programs and activities; report findings to the President, Senior Team, Assessment Liaison Officer, and other stakeholders as appropriatenn nnAdministrative n
• Serve as the President’s advisor on DEI matters and makes recommendations to the President on DEI programs that impact the College community and the diversity initiatives introduced in response to the strategic plann
• Collaborate with Human Resources to ensure recruitment and retention priorities are in sync with the college’s strategic plan and Board prioritiesn
• Partner with the VP, Human Resources and Development to ensure compliance with a variety of State and Federal laws related to DEI such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Act ( EEO ), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, all as amended, and any other applicable lawsn
• Provide leadership and oversight of the Center; manage the Center’s DEI budget and make recommendations to the President regarding grants, scholarships, and institutional advancement n
• Oversee the future staffing of the Center for DEI ; recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training and supervision of a diverse staff and contractors; oversee performance evaluation process ensuring consistent use of all applicable policies and procedures; apply performance management for improved performance, make recommendations in discipline and terminations, as required.nn nn Required Qualifications nn nnQualificationsnn nn
• Master’s degree in Human Resources, Sociology, Communication Studies, Business Administration, Multicultural Studies, or a related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience requiredn
• 5 or more years of relevant experience working in diversity-related positions n
• Ability to influence culture and behavior change, collaborate, and work successfully with College senior executives, managers, staff members, students, Board members, and external constituentsn
• Demonstrated knowledge of Human Resources functions such as recruitment and selection, professional development, training, employee relations, and policy administrationn
• Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to anti-discrimination, including Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972, the Jeanne Clery Act of 1990, the Violence Against Women Act of 1994, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, all as amendedn
• Familiarity with contemporary discourse, issues, pedagogical practices, curriculum development, fundraising practices and principles, research methods, survey development and related best practices for DEI programs, initiatives, practices, and policiesn
• Demonstrated experience in and a commitment to diversity; the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with various constituencies within Otis’s diverse communities, internally and externallyn
