District Manager – Greater Los Angeles

Founded in San Francisco, Pet Food Express is one of the country’s leading independent pet food and supply retailers, built on our philosophy of providing the best for pets.

With over 60 stores located throughout California and a growing online delivery and BOPIS business, we are seeking an experienced and hands-on District Manager to oversee stores in our SoCal district.

District Managers at PFE set the example, develop people, and solve problems daily.

Reporting to the VP of Retail and Operations, you would have the ability to make a substantial impact on the success of the business while creating a culture of inclusion where store employees at all levels can reach their full potential.

What you’ll do:
Develop the Vision.

In partnership with the District Manager team, develop a clear vision and strategy for the growth of our stores.

Take the lead on projects and develop targeted training connecting store employees to the ‘why’.

Rigorously monitor competitor and industry trends and innovations to drive relevant proactive and responsive actions.
People Development: Lead store teams to achieve outstanding results, ensuring the achievement of all objectives including sales, expense control, productivity, and the smooth functioning of day-to-day operations.

Directly provide mentorship, guidance, and career development to ensure effective leadership talent for growth and new locations.
Recruitment and Retention Strategy: Build a recruitment strategy that increases efficiency in people operations
– recruiting, onboarding, developing, and retaining talent.

Partner with Recruiting/HR, DM team, and other corporate team members to develop outside applicant streams to fill open positions.

Lead managers to build a high-performing, inclusive, and engaging environment.
Set Sales Goals: Set monthly volume and category targeted sales goals in collaboration with the District Management team.

Partner with the Area Team to develop and implement company sales training and strategies.

Review performance daily/weekly and course-correct as needed.
Inventory Management: Partner with merchandising and logistics partners on channel product selling and performance maximization.

Use inventory procedures to address out of stocks and on-hand variances.
Facilities Management: Ensure stores and services like our Pet Wash and VIP (vaccine clinic) are fully operational and meet grand opening standards.

Assigned stores must have high-quality execution and implementation of all company-directed visual standards and updates.
Community Outreach Partnership: Develop meaningful relationships with rescue partners.

Work with store teams on weekly and monthly adoption events.
Delivery Optimization: Optimize the performance of people and processes to deliver the best possible customer experience that reflects our brand standards and company values from our delivery hubs.
Store Support: Maintain a presence in all store locations to provide support and be where the action is, including nights and weekends.
What you’ll bring:
5+ years of multi-location retail management.
A proven track record of driving sales, positive results, and growth.
Experience in pet retail is a plus.
Ability and willingness to communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences to create a collaborative and caring community.
A demonstrable history of building strong teams, developing and inspiring others to succeed through a combination of coaching and training, providing, and receiving fearless feedback, goal setting, and performance evaluation.
Highly skilled in informed decision-making and obtaining buy-in makes sound decisions based on available information, relevant data, logical assumptions, and strong judgment.

Knows when it’s necessary to decide without complete data and how to balance competing perspectives and win the support and commitment of others.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
An aptitude for technology with strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Strong quantitative skills pertinent to inventory control and sales analysis.
Flexibility to visit SoCal district stores in the Greater Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Ability to work nights, weekends, and select holidays.
Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
