Engineer Auto Research

Provides a high level of technical expertise on automotive-related subjects.

Design, develop and conduct technical research studies and lead automotive testing and analysis related to vehicle emissions, advanced driver assistance systems automotive design, operation, safety and other automotive technologies.

Utilize the results to provide useful consumer information to members and the auto industry.

Provide a high level of automotive expertise as the automotive subject matter expert.

Perform analyses of key public policy issues in automotive technology.

Articulate and communicate automotive information and research to senior management, at legislative, regulatory, public policy and industry forums.

Responsibilities:

1.

Develops and conducts technical research studies, testing and analysis related to vehicle emissions, advanced driver assistance systems, automotive design, operation, safety and other automotive technologies using a scientific approach.

Utilize the results to provide useful consumer information to members and influence the development and improvement of vehicles, parts and services and mitigate safety problems.

Stay current on all state and federal rules and regulations related to vehicle fuel economy and emissions, including any changes that might need to be made to internal processes, testing procedures or equipment.

Lead the development of vehicle-related research and testing that contributes to the organization’s business line strategies and refinement of member services and products (such as telematics, “On the Go”, and insurance claims).

Responsibilities include leading the development and / or and evaluation of services, products, and procedures that may be provided or sold to members or advertised in member publications and providing information to ERS and Claims about new technologies, vehicle recalls, safety investigations, and technical service bulletins from a variety of sources.

Manages projects related to automotive, emissions and air quality issues.

Perform tests of benefit to members, other vehicle users and internal clients.

Performs analyses of key public policy issues in automotive technology and related areas, especially those related to vehicle emissions, fuel economy and EV efficiency and represent the organization in appropriate internal and external forums.

Assist the organization’s advocates on these issues to legislatures, local government bodies, administrative agencies, business and community organizations, technical organizations, and others as appropriate.

Contribute to development of the organization’s strategic vision with emphasis on legislative and regulatory affairs and public and member information.

Lead the development of written studies and other communication materials on a variety of motor vehicle related topics (including the safety, performance, value, and impact of vehicles, aftermarket equipment, and related products) for use in member publications, on ACE websites, as stand-alone brochures or other marketing collateral, in press releases and other information provided to the media or other entities.

Prepare updates for manager and others as appropriate or requested on automotive trends, testing results and public policy.

Responsible for the working order and maintenance of the testing facility and all fuel economy, emissions, EV range, diagnostic and other testing equipment.

Ensure that equipment and procedures are in line with current and future requirements and make improvement recommendations.

Qualifications:

Four-year college degree.

Advanced degree and/or professional certification or licensing in automotive engineering or closely related field is required.

Minimum of 7 years’ experience in automotive research design, engineering, analysis, testing and management of staff performing same; preferably a combination thereof.

Experience with chassis dyno testing, including emissions, fuel economy and EV range testing of vehicles preferred.
*
Comprehensive oral and written communications skills.
*
Comprehensive ability to interact well with broad variety of groups and individuals.
*
Advanced ability to successfully develop and implement initiatives and programs.
*
Proficiency in MS Office programs and specialized hardware and software necessary for technical tasks.
*
California vehicle operator’s license and excellent driving record required.
*
Member of automotive associations such as SAE and industry certified candidates (i.e.

ASE) are preferred.
