The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections.
Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.
Reporting to the Objects Conservator, the Assistant Objects Conservator will engage in the treatment, study, maintenance, and preventive care of objects and materials in the permanent collection.
You will actively participate in all aspects of practical conservation and work collaboratively with contractors and museum staff with object handling, analysis, storage, installation, display, and security.
This is a temporary one-year position ending on September 1, 2022.
You Will: * Assist in exhibition planning, installations and deinstallations.* Make recommendations on treatment, handling, and installation.* Prioritize and carry out necessary conservation treatments.* Document all treatment work in writing and high-quality photography.* Perform all work in accordance with AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.* Monitor the environment, maintenance of casework micro-environments, and pest management.* Participate in conservation science research projects and material analysis.* Order supplies, manage contracts, and to help improve and develop protocols, procedures, and workflow for the new conservation lab.* Mentor pre-program and graduate interns.* Perform additional tasks in support of conservation activities in the Objects Lab.
You Have: * A master’s degree with a specialization in objects conservation from a recognized conservation training program, or equivalent experience.* Familiarity with the examination and treatment of various material-types.* A personal interest in working with contemporary materials, metals, industrial and technology equipment, plastics, and painted surfaces preferred.* Experience communicating effectively and clearly both verbally and in writing.* Experience with digital photography, post-processing, and ultraviolet photography.* Experience with Adobe Photoshop/Bridge, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.* Experience using analytical equipment, such as polarized light microscopes, FTIR, XRF, and RAMAN.* A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
