Post-Doctoral Fellowship positions

Post-Doctoral Fellowship positions (3) in substance abuse research broadly related to health disparities
Los Angeles, CA

About us
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) is a private, non-profit, mission-driven educational institution located in sunny Los Angeles, CA. Nationally recognized as a leader in diversity, CDU has been named the second most diverse four-year private nonprofit college in the nation. For over 50 years, we have been preparing healthcare professionals with an understanding in health disparities, health policy, and social justice.

We are seeking up to 3 extraordinary and dedicated post-doctoral fellows interested in performing basic science, clinical, epidemiology, or policy research related to substance use disorders.

We are excited to implement the Next Generation Substance Abuse Disorders Research Training (SART) at CDU and UCLA R25 grant funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (Grant no. 1R25DA050723-01A1), which focuses on training researchers at all stages of their career in substance use disorder research, responsible conduct of research, and career advancement with a novel emphasis on community engagement and dissemination. As the program comprises a partnership between CDU and UCLA, which are about 20 miles apart, it affords post-doctoral fellows the opportunity for training at either CDU or UCLA.

Although this program is intended to increase diversity within the scientific research workforce, all individuals are eligible to apply. We encourage candidates who are eligible for an NIH diversity supplement to apply for this position. To be eligible for this diversity supplement, candidates should meet the qualifications as outlined at http://www.drugabuse.gov/about-nida/organization/offices/office-nida-director-od/odhd/faqs-about-research-supplements-to-pro and include those who are Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander. Additionally, individuals with disabilities or those from disadvantaged backgrounds are also eligible for the supplement.

One specific research project will involve studying the effects of electronic cigarettes on cardiac function and genes in mice. Experience with working with mice and breeding transgenic/knockout mice is highly desirable for this project.

In addition to conducting research, the 5-year grant provides in person and online training in basic research methods, biostatistics, grant writing, professional development, and more. A clinical practicum in substance abuse and mentorship opportunities are also included. Our program emphasizes a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team science approach.

Trainees will receive training in advanced research skills in substance use from highly skilled, reputable, and diverse mentors. After successfully completing your fellowship there is the opportunity to transition to a faculty  position. Our goal is to train you to become independently funded researchers in substance abuse research.

The positions will begin in September, 2020 although some positions may be filled at a later date. This position is a full-time assignment for 30 months, contingent on successful performance and continued funding. There will be opportunities for extensions.
Salary is consistent with NIH post-doctoral fellow range and commensurate with experience. Benefits are excellent.
