Group Nine Media is seeking an experienced attorney to join its growing Legal and Business Affairs Team.
Reporting to the Senior Counsel who oversees the Company’s entertainment vertical, the role will involve providing a full range of legal functions, with an initial focus on drafting and negotiating complex production and distribution-related agreements, advising on intellectual property matters and issues such as fair use, and other day-to-day production matters.
This person will need to be able to articulate positions related to the media and entertainment industry from start to finish, in a way that balances the business needs and risk mitigation while achieving the business objectives.
They will serve as a trusted and knowledgeable point of contact for the divisional business leaders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as dedicated legal support for individual Group Nine Media brands and business groups, advising primarily on entertainment and media-related matters, including intellectual property and publicity rights, agreements for third party contingent workforce vendors, engaging entertainment industry unions, tracking rights and permissions, adhering to company production and development standards, branded content programs, and other day-to-day development and production matters.
Structure, negotiate, and draft a variety of complex development and production deals, including option and rights acquisition agreements, co-production and production services agreements, talent agreements, and content distribution licenses. Manage relationships with external production and development partners including external entertainment counsel, rights and clearance consultants, and third-party production services companies.
Manage administration and resolution of legal issues that arise in existing commercial relationships.
Help maintain Legal and Business Affairs team infrastructure, company records, and internal systems.
Stay up-to-date and keep key business partners informed about changes to existing policies, laws, and regulations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
JD degree, admission to California State Bar or New York State Bar (must be in good standing) 5+ years of relevant work experience (in-house experience at a digital media and/or production company strongly preferred).
Basic understanding of legal issues that arise at a digital media company, including content production and distribution deals.
Experience and confidence independently drafting and negotiating a variety of entertainment-related agreements and releases.
Ability to handle multiple tasks on tight deadlines while remaining organized, composed, and thoughtful.
Strong sense of urgency and people management skills.
Excellent organization, prioritization, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Strong attention to detail, commitment to quality, and passion for results.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and understanding of relevant technology, including various digital distribution channels, content development systems, and advertising platforms.
Willingness to adopt new tools and systems.
Strong interest in the business and desire to work within a multidisciplinary team.
