Boeing Defense, Space, and Security (BDS), Space and Launch Division, is seeking a Lead Platform System Engineer (Level 4) to support the team in El Segundo, CA. The Space and Launch Team creates the next generation products and services for the BDS business unit. We work with proprietary customers in the development of the next-generation technologies in space.  Our team focuses on rapid prototyping to demonstrate a host of mission-focused technologies for a variety of customers.  Our group works all facets of engineering from technology investment, concept development, proposal writing, requirements and design, build, integration, test, and demonstration of products in their relevant environments.

Position Overview:

The Lead Platform Systems Engineer will be a part of a high-performing team that are immersed in high intensity development projects. As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to develop and analyze state-of-the-art satellite systems for national security programs, civil, and other government programs. This role will focus on high impact, creative solutions to complex technical problems, and work as part of a large team. This position will allow the successful candidate to develop and execute a set of integrated SEIT plans and technical artifacts that will enable the program to meet the technical performance parameters and mission success.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develops the platform architecture and design from concept through build and delivery to the customer.  This includes requirement analysis, system analysis and simulations, functional analysis and allocation as well as synthesis of the product and its related concept of operations that meet the contractual specification while optimizing the balance between cost, schedule, performance and risk over the lifecycle.

  • Leads platform level trade studies to achieve optimized designs and conducts the knowledge-gap process for high non-recurring (NRE) efforts.

  • Serves as the cost account manager (CAM) for the platform subsystems and specialty engineering including cost and schedule performance as well as updated estimates at completion.

  • Provides guidance to platform system engineering team as they contribute to the design, also ensures quality, integrated products are created by the team members in a timely manner.

  • Captures the architecture and functional subsystem designs and related subsystem, unit and component level specifications as well as interface requirements while acting as the customer to ensure design compliance.

  • Assists with management and maintenance of system level Interface Control Documents (ICDs).

  • Ensures adequacy of platform integration and test efforts; ensures the integrated subsystems work and verifies satisfaction of contractual requirements.

  • Develops verification requirements for the subsystem, optimizes integration & test plans, obtains customer approval of verification artifacts.

  • Works across integrated product teams (IPTs) to ensure alignment of engineering activities.

  • Maintains key budgets such as power, mass, spacecraft pointing, etc., and drives compliance by managing margins.

  • Resolves platform technical issues and participating in ROI (risk/issue/opportunity) board which is managed by the chief engineer.

  • Ensures engineering is current, under proper configuration control and updates are properly coordinated through program engineering change board.

  • Oversees creation and delivery of platform owned customer CDRLs.

  • Assists System Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT) lead in balancing program cost, schedule, and risk in support of program decisions.

Work Authorization:

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.  An interim and/or final U.S. confidential clearance Post Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics.

  • 7 years or more of experience as a systems engineer assessing functionality or performance of a complex system.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience with decomposing requirements and development of spacecraft architectures.

  • Experience with space, launch, vehicle, satellite programs or other complex systems.

  • Experience in development, build and test of space vehicles.

  • Experience with requirement verification methods and artifacts.

Typical Education/Experience: 

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD +3 years’ related work experience, Masters +5 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
