The Design Manager is responsible for the coordination and completion of projects across various functional areas.
Provides subject matter expertise in areas including project scope definition, risk identification, project methodology, resource allocation, facilitation, and other areas of expertise.
Makes presentations to management on project updates, project cycle, and expected results.
Ensures projects are completed on time and in scope.
Client representative for care delivery organizations within the Real Estate Services OptumCare (RESOC) platform to assure quality of work and best interest including design and construction, target schedules, brand image, and patient experience.

Primary Responsibilities:
Manage Site Development
Advise on preliminary site and building layout decisions while adhering to various Care Delivery Organization (CDO) program requirements, property owner restrictions, and local planning and zoning regulations Regulate design considerations by overseeing Architect Alliance Partners during site plan, floor plan, and elevation development, resolving concerns by referencing previous experience and architectural knowledge Manage multiple projects concurrently throughout various geographical regions, with scopes ranging from renovations, interior fit-outs, co-locations, consolidations, expansions, and new construction ground-up projects Review construction drawing sets at integral stages of the design process to ensure quality control, streamlining the permitting process by reducing and eliminating permit review comments Address questions received by construction project managers and general contractors during the construction administration phase including post-construction punch lists to confirm quality assurance and relay findings to design team for future projects Maintain clinical design guidelines issued quarterly, improving through internal feedback, in-field construction considerations, and local jurisdiction requirements to streamline the design process and reduce the amount of change orders received during the construction phase Implement design solutions focused on code compliance and value engineering to reduce overall capital expenditures while ensuring quality finished deliverables Collaborates and manages miscellaneous projects across the RESOC platform according to CDO workload and resources available Works on various typologies adapting to CDO standards and applicable governing codes Manage Project Scope
Ensure that all impacted areas are identified, and that appropriate resources are engaged to participate in the scope definition process Confirm that project scope, requirements and approvals comply with current governance guidelines and methodology Control Project Timelines and Resources
Identify project duration, effort, sequence, and dependencies of tasks required to meet applicable project objectives Ensure that resources are acquired to meet project requirements, escalating for assistance where gaps exist Obtain agreement from stakeholders on schedule, time management and resource plans, and negotiate changes/adjust project plans as needed Provide project direction and performance feedback to the team throughout the project, as appropriate.
Monitor and report progress during the assigned tasks, using appropriate project planning and scheduling tools (e.g., dashboards, metrics) Ensure that schedule and resource changes are aligned with project scope, objectives, constraints and risks Plans and assigns work according to consultant’s workload, establishing priorities and deadlines relative to project pipeline Control Project Financials
Communicate and proactively provide solutions to leadership when obstacles develop that will affect a project’s budget Identify/approve procurement needs for external resources (e.g., due diligence, design professionals) Project Quality
Establish/apply quality objectives, criteria, standards and levels using appropriate quality management methods, with input from applicable stakeholders (e.g., key performance indicators, scope definition).
Ensure that all project deliverables are in compliance with applicable standards and regulations (e.g., International Building Code, Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines, Department of Health, HIPAA, energy compliance, federal/state regulatory requirements) Monitor and document project milestones and outcomes during the assigned tasks to ensure adherence to established quality standards Confirm that all project deliverables are on track during the assigned tasks and take appropriate action when needed Monitor project results going forward and ensure that the project is delivering the expected benefits to the business, obtaining feedback from stakeholders as appropriate Identify root causes of substandard project outcomes and recommend appropriate resolutions.
Ensure that new/revised business processes/procedures are documented/updated/approved, as needed (e.g., process flows, checklists, standard libraries, training guides) Develop, disseminate, and utilize standard operating procedures and protocols for project and program delivery Supervise design professionals, evaluate work, recommend and implement improvements Apply lessons learned from previous projects to the overall prototypical standard set in order to mitigate cost and avoid reoccurring hardships and conflicts, improving design and construction processes Manage Project Risk/Issues
Identify/prioritize potential risks/issues in a timely way during the assigned tasks Ensure adherence to established risk management approaches to identify, analyze and mitigate project risks/issues, as applicable Develop/implement contingency and recovery plans when deliverables/milestones are missed (e.g., identify critical path, document plan for getting back on plan/schedule) Analyze and ensure resolution of identified risks and issues, collaborating with and obtaining approvals from applicable stakeholders as needed (e.g., root causes) Manage Project Relationships and Communications
Lead cross-function teams, including property owners, developers, architects, interior designers, engineers, and various consultants with strong emphasis on maintaining financial and scheduling objectives Manage the flow of project information between multidisciplinary teams through regular meetings and written communications to identify potential concerns and mitigate risk Work closely with internal departments including real estate, construction, facilities, legal, marketing, and clinical operations to satisfy all parameters required to develop and deliver successful business initiatives.
Manage vendor and service providers to define project scope and performance expectations Develop/maintain definition of project roles/responsibilities and communicate to project participants Establish, develop and maintain effective relationships with applicable project stakeholders (e.g., project team members, team leads, internal customers, vendors, business partners, leadership) Manage vendor relationships and/or obtain required contract approvals, as needed Recognize/celebrate project team contributions throughout the project Resolve conflicts among project participants using appropriate influence techniques, escalating to others as needed Maintains records and prepares accurate reports, presentations, and other material to effectively communicate the project’s life and next steps to achieve project objectives Establish/implement plans for ongoing project documentation storage (e.g., department server, documentation management, Sharefile, BIM 360 Docs) Act as owner representative with vendors, and third-party consultants You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.
Required Qualifications:
