Position Summary:

The Associate Director will be responsible for supporting the development, implementation and advancement of Community-Based Learning ( CBL ) programs in the Center for Service and Action ( CSA ).

As LMU works to more deeply commit to the needs of the Black community on and off campus, the Associate Director of Community-Based Learning will work in consultation with the Director of CSA to strengthen existing relationships and develop new relationships with community partners that are Black-led and justice-oriented in promoting the liberation of Black communities in Los Angeles.

This position works with the Director of Community-Based Learning to provide a bridge between the goals and resources of the Academic and Student Affairs Divisions to increase students’ engagement with the community beyond LMU .

Position Specific Responsibilities:
Identify and develop new relationships with community organizations that are Black-led and justice-oriented in promoting the liberation of Black communities in and around Los Angeles.

In consultation with the Director, collaborate and strengthen existing relationships with community organizations that are Black-led and justice-oriented in promoting the liberation of Black communities in and around Los Angeles.

Collaborate with faculty to identify and choose among the service agencies and opportunities offered by the Center for Service and Action that appropriately address the concepts and objectives of the faculty members’ courses.

Provide support to student organizations outside of CSA that are looking to integrate service and justice in the greater Los Angeles area, particularly Black communities into their organizational engagements.

Collaborate with other staff members within the Center for Service and Action to create and implement trainings and develop resources for student organizations as well as students participating in community-based learning that wish to do service, justice, or advocacy work.

Work with campus partners to prepare Black students to obtain fellowships in areas related to service, justice, advocacy and civic engagement.

Select, train, supervise, and evaluate work-study staff for Community-Based Learning.

In consultation with the Director of Community
– Based Learning, work with community partners to identify service and advocacy opportunities to support faculty who wish to incorporate community-based learning in their courses during the COVID -19 pandemic.

Support community partners to highlight their service and justice opportunities for engagement in LMU’s GivePulse volunteer management platform.

Coordinate LMU’s annual service and advocacy event for first year students at the start of each academic year.

Oversee the LMU Empowerment Fund and Campus Compact Fellows Program.

Serve as the advisor to Special Games, a student-run organization that brings together the special needs community of Los Angeles and the University.

Identify grant opportunities to support Community-based Learning programs and other CSA programs that interface with the community.

Represent CSA and LMU within the Student Affairs and Academic Affairs community, serve on committees as required.

Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Experience/Qualifications: Minimum four years of administrative and leadership experience focused on community-based learning.

Familiarity with diverse communities in and around Los Angeles County.

Proven experience working with non-profit agencies, college-aged students, and faculty.

Experience and knowledge of community partners that are Black led or justice-oriented in promoting the liberation of Black communities in and around Los Angeles.

Demonstrated knowledge of and capacity to articulate the value of students and faculty engaging in service and justice work with nonprofit community organizations in and around Los Angeles.

Knowledge of the theoretical and practical dimensions of service-learning pedagogies appropriate across a wide variety of academic disciplines.

Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with LMU administrators, faculty, students, staff, and community partners.

Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with diverse populations in a multicultural environment.

Strong problem-solving skills in the context of interpersonal and group relations required.

Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and complete them in a timely fashion required.

Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Demonstrated computer competency and preferably knowledgeable of MS Word, Excel, on-line survey software, and web page publisher systems.

Required Education:
Typically, Master’s Degree in social work, public administration, non-profit leadership, urban planning, higher education administration or another related field or equivalent experience.
