International Student Advisor

nnAMDA College of the Performing Arts, with campuses in New York City and Hollywood, is one of the foremost post-secondary performing arts colleges in the country.

AMDA offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degree programs in Acting, Musical Theatre, Dance Theatre and Performing Arts, as well as two year conservatory programs.nn nnThe International Student Advisor will provide educational guidance and assistance to international students by helping them to recognize and achieve their educational goals.

This position serves as the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO), and also supports the Education Department by generating reports, assisting with the creation or updating of policies, procedures or handbooks, and database maintenance pertaining to AMDA’s International Student population.nn nn Primary Responsibilities:nn Keep the I-17 certification and records current and in compliance with SEVP regulations.

Maintain up-to-date awareness of regulatory laws, policies and procedures affecting international students.

Maintain International student records in SEVIS, Campus Vue, and physical files, as needed.

Maintain files and documentation in conjunction with the Education Department.

Develop DSO procedures; update as necessary.

Train DSOs on the SEVIS system, Federal regulations for international students, and provide up-to-date resources.

Advise International students, including prospective students, enrolled students, and alumni on the I-20 application process, maintaining F-1 status, and OPT (Optional Practical Training).

Register all international students (incoming and current) in SEVIS at the beginning of each semester.

Conduct International Student Orientation for new students and OPT information meetings each semester.

Hold periodic International Student meetings/seminars for enrolled students, as required.

Provide counsel to other AMDA departments with regard to international student regulations and other issues.

Generate social security letters for new international student hires.

Review international verbiage for catalogue, mobile site, etc.

with the NY campus PDSO to provide via official mediums.

Update the International Student brochure to be used on the AMDA website; Develop OPT application brochures for pending graduates; update as necessary.

Create/Update forms required to keep student file in compliance using standard format conventions.

Provide programming and support for the international student population, at least twice each semester, in conjunction with Student Affairs.

Perform other related duties as required.

Maintain and stay abreast of all federal guidelines and policies as pertaining to students and AMDA.

Inform students and AMDA of any regulatory changes.

nn Qualification: nn Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.

Strong understanding of issues and trends in immigration and education abroad, and in servicing and developing programs for international students.

Demonstrated ability to work successfully with people from different cultures.

2+ years experience with International Student Services, with a strong understanding of the cultural adjustment process (experience in the performing arts environment a plus).

2+ years experience with Academic Advising.

Understanding of Immigration issues related to international students.

Understanding of F-1 visa process.

Knowledge of FERPA.

SEVIS Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Adobe.

Strong organizational, multi-tasking and time management skills.

Effective communication skills.

Strong business writing skills.

Legally required to be a U.S.

citizen, or have Lawful Permanent Resident Status, to fulfill PDSO duties.

nn Licenses/Certification Required : nn Will be required to become certified by U.S.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (a division of the U.S.

Department of Homeland Security) for Principle/ Designated School Officials for International Students.
