Lactation Educator Part-Time

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lactation Educator is responsible for providing lactation management services to expectant and new parents. This position requires broad and in-depth knowledge of breastfeeding and lactation management, including inpatient and outpatient settings. Collaboration with community organizations and clinics, Perinatal staff and leadership and patients and families will be required. This role will ensure the maintenance of the Baby Friendly 10 steps.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates knowledge of current standards related to breastfeeding as defined by the AAP, ACOG, and local regulations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of adult learner concepts
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current neonatal standards
  • Assists moms and infants with breastfeeding, education and resources
  • Effective counseling, education, and coaching skills utilizing participant centered techniques and motivational interviewing.
  • Knowledge of Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and collaborate/mentor staff to maintain Baby Friendly guidelines.
  • Works closely with the Department Manager, Department Director and nurses to provide a continuum of services.
  • Confers with assigned nurse regarding need for any additional hospital services or referrals and assists with referral process, if needed.
  • Collaborates and acts as a liaison with other members of the healthcare team, including nurses, social workers, and physician to coordinate provision of high quality patient care.
  • Acts as a liaison between the organization and the community while supporting the development of breastfeeding support opportunities
  • Participates in community outreach activities as requested
  • Provides breastfeeding education to the Perioperative department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures of the hospital
  • Independently recognizes and performs duties which need to be done without being directly assigned.
  • Establishes priorities; organizes work and time to meet them.
  • Recognizes and responds to priorities, accepts changes and new ideas.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Has insight into problems and the ability to develop workable alternatives.
  • Accepts constructive criticism in a positive manner.
  • Adheres to attendance and punctuality requirements per hospital policy. Provides proper notification for absences and tardiness. Takes corrective action to prevent recurring absences or tardiness.
  • Uses time effectively and constructively. Does not abuse supplies, equipment, and service.
  • Observes all hospital and departmental policies governing conduct while at work (e.g., telephone and computer use, electronic messaging, smoking regulations, parking, breaks and other related policies).

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

  • Bachelor’s degree desired.

B. Qualifications/Experience

  • Be able to communicate with a variety of relevant entities and facilitate collaborative responsibilities and communication.
  • Strong communication, public relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to different situations.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge

  • Current BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC )
