The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures advances the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Exhibitions, the Director of Exhibition Planning is responsible for managing the planning and coordination of all Museum exhibitions and installations, including long-term installations and temporary exhibitions and projects. The Director will be a central point person for all issues related to management of the Museum’s exhibition programs from conception through implementation. The Director will oversee all aspects of planning, budgeting, and execution for several exhibitions concurrently. In addition, the Director will create and maintain planning procedures, advise on best practices, and work closely with various Museum departments as well as with others outside the Museum, all while successfully contributing to the Museum’s mission.

The starting date of this position is July 1, 2024.

You Will:

  • Be responsible for all issues related to scheduling and timeline, financial management, and contracting for the Museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions and installations.
  • Together with the Museum’s Director, Chief Operating Officer, and the Executive Vice President of Exhibitions, play a key role in the long-term strategic planning of the Museum’s overall exhibition schedule in relation to timing, budgets, and collaborations.
  • Work closely with internal Exhibitions Design & Production, Curatorial, Registration & Collection Management, Finance, Facilities, Publications, Legal, Digital Strategy and other departments, as well as outside vendors, independent contractors, and consultants to ensure exhibitions are completed on time and on budget.
  • Act as the central point of contact for exhibitions from inception to completion, ensuring that project information is gathered and communicated as needed.
  • Develop and manage schedules, timelines, and next-step lists for each of the galleries, while monitoring delivery dates and deadlines from key stakeholders, documenting progress of all exhibition phases, including design, object and media checklists, conservation, digital strategy, image clearance, media production, didactics, construction, fabrication, lighting, and installation.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to build fiscal year budgets, forecast expense projections, create initial budget, and scope proposals for each exhibition, while monitoring actual vs projected costs to ensure expenses stay within the budget.
  • Provide financial analyses and other budget-related information as requested by the Museum’s executive team.
  • Develop and oversee the Exhibition Planning department’s annual budget.
  • Supervise, manage, train, and evaluate the Exhibition Planning team, adhering to the Academy Museum’s standards for employee oversight.
  • Work with the Advancement team on exhibition-related grants, providing budget projections, expenses, and reconciliation.
  • Review, approve, provide account codes, process invoices, and track expenses.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in film, art history, museum studies, business management, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years’ experience providing administrative and project management support for exhibition planning.
  • Experience working with numerous departments and external artists, designers, vendors, and consultants to develop and implement exhibitions and installations.
  • Experience with contracting and financial management of exhibition and installation projects.
  • Knowledge of museum practices and current guidelines and practices in exhibition management.
  • General knowledge of copyright laws and rights clearance processes.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity with Airtable preferred.
  • A team player who possesses excellent interpersonal, organizational, critical thinking, communication, and office skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, but also the ability to work with others, maintain effective working relationships, and communicate problems and solutions clearly to supervisors and staff.
  • Ability to multitask, address complex issues, coordinate high-volume work, and work in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Salary:

The expected base salary range for this role is $100,000-$110,000. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
