The Aviation Safety Team in the Southern California Global Design Center seeks a Systems Safety Engineer (Associate or Mid-Level) to join our team in Long Beach, California.

This engineer will be interested in exploring the design of commercial aircraft systems during development, modification, and operation. We are seeking innovative, enthusiastic, and highly collaborative teammates that have unlimited curiosity, and a passion for diving into design architecture details. The team’s broad work statement will provide the opportunity to perform safety analysis at the component, system, and airplane level across a broad range of functional disciplines including; Avionics, Mechanical, Environmental, Electrical, and Propulsion. We are looking for individuals that are adept at evaluating system architectures to determine the consequences of failures, malfunctions, and defects, and can collaborate with Design Engineers to help create a robust design.

Strong candidates will have an engineering background, with a solid understanding of statistical methods. Position Responsibilities:

  • Identify hazards associated with aircraft functions and the potential failure modes, and effects of systems and components performing those functions

  • Perform detailed analysis of aircraft system architecture

  • Model aircraft system functional relationships and apply quantitative analysis techniques, such as Fault Tree Analysis

  • Collaborate with design engineers to impart safety requirements into the design

  • Validate new aircraft design and in-service aircraft modification safety

  • Mine large databases for aircraft operational performance history, including failure and maintenance events

  • Perform statistical analysis using concepts such as, Weibull distribution, normal distribution, standard deviations, and probability of failure analysis

  • Analyze aircraft operational event data to determine potential unsafe conditions

  • Coordinate analyses, safety review board presentations, and corrective actions with the functional design organizations and the Federal Aviation Administration

  • Perform system safety and reliability analyses on aircraft across the entire lifecycle

  • Support root cause analysis using the Boeing Problem Solving Model

  • Contribute to the development of Safety Lessons Learned artifacts

  • Present safety analysis results to program stakeholders and leadership

  • Explore the design and integration of aircraft systems and their operational procedures

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at the listed location option. **Note: The expectation is 3-4 days per week in the office.

This position must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.15 is required.  “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee. 

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • 2+ years of experience in aerospace systems engineering

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 3+ years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience with engineering/scientific principles with particular emphasis on the aeronautical, mechanical, and electrical system disciplines

  • Experience with aircraft systems, components, and functions (e.g., Flight Controls, Hydraulics, Avionics, Fuels, etc.) or Systems Integration

  • Experience with Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 25.1309

  • Experience with Recommended Practices ARP4754 (ARP) 4761

  • Experience with Continued Operation Safety Process (COSP) and reporting criteria

  • Experience gathering, manipulating, and analyzing large amounts of data

  • Experience in assessing and documenting analysis to show compliance

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Typical Education/Experience: 

Associate (Level 2):

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g., Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g., Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Mid-Level (Level 3):

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g., Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g., PhD, Master+3 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Please note that the salary information shown below is a general guideline only.  Salaries are based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. 

Summary pay range for Associate level: $87,550 – 118-450

Summary pay range for Mid-Level: $104,550 – 141,450
