About the Veterinarian Position

Looking for a fast-paced work environment, where you can focus on direct animal care?  Become an spcaLA Veterinarian!  Your expertise will benefit animal victims of abuse, lost and surrendered animals, pets of domestic violence survivors and other community members in crises.  Your skills will support animal cruelty investigations, disaster response efforts, foster programs, and low-cost vaccine clinics.

Our Animal Medical Care Philosophy

Plainly put, we practice veterinary medicine in a shelter environment. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive preventative and therapeutic approach to animal care. You have the autonomy to practice conventional medicine, enrichment and training, as well as complementary and alternative treatments for the benefit of shelter pets.

We provide on-site medical equipment and specialty medicines that are not found in most shelters, and we have generous support from private hospitals.

We believe in positive reinforcement dog training and employ fear-free handling techniques.

Your primary responsibility is the prevention of illness/injury and medical care of shelter animals, including, but not limited to, medical examinations and monitoring; diagnosis, and treatment. As a socially conscious shelter advocate, determine and evaluate quality of issues as well as recommendations for/performance of humane euthanasia.

Essential qualifications: Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM); license in good standing with California State Veterinary Board; license with Drug Enforcement Agency. Ability to hold and maintain premise permits for a sheltering location during employment.  Preferred: 1 – 3 years practical experience as a veterinarian (shelter environment a plus).  Recent graduates encouraged to apply!

This is a full-time posting, but part-time and relief opportunities may be available. This position works out of spcaLA Pet Adoption Centers in Long Beach and Hawthorne, California.
