In March 2020, AAPI Equity, with Chinese for Affirmative Action and San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies Department, founded Stop AAPI Hate (SAH), a national coalition addressing anti-AAPI racism across the U.S and the leading aggregator of self-reported hate incidents against AAPIs.
AAPI Equity is seeking an Intake Manager who will lead the process of reviewing reports of hate incidents shared by AAPIs across the country with Stop AAPI Hate and conduct follow-up 1:1 interviews with AAPIs.
The Intake Manager will report to the Managing Director of Policy and the Project Director at AAPI Equity, and will work closely with the Director of Research at SAH. The Intake Manager may also work with other members of the AAPI Equity and SAH teams depending on the project. This position is based in Los Angeles.
Responsibilities
The Intake Manager will perform the following duties:
● Develop standardized questions for the SAH reporting center with input from the Managing Director of Policy, Project Director, Executive Director of AAPI Equity and the Director of Research at Stop AAPI Hate. Update questions as appropriate based upon needs of SAH reporting center.
● Review reports of hate incidents to SAH for content, categorization, and potential referral to partner organizations.
● Conduct and document follow-up interviews with AAPIs reporting to SAH with the goal of obtaining further detail about the hate incidents experienced.
● Refer AAPIs reporting to SAH to support services, as appropriate.
● Assist in identifying, and building infrastructure to receive and review, reports of anti-AAPI hate through other mechanisms, such as text or social media, and connect those individuals to SAH.
● Represent AAPI Equity in partnerships with government and nonprofit partners to connect AAPIs with resources.
● Identify individual cases and create a collection of cases for advocacy and media opportunities in conjunction with SAH communications staff.
● Be an active member of the SAH research and data team, including supporting data, intake, research, and analysis as appropriate.
● Manage intake coordinator(s) and/or volunteers and interns.
Qualifications
We welcome candidates with the following qualities:
● Strong commitment to the mission and values of AAPI Equity and SAH.
● Two to five years of work experience with collecting data, reviewing data, conducting interviews, or documenting data/interview collection.
● Comfort and experience in conducting culturally-competent, trauma-informed interviews with individuals from different backgrounds and life experiences, and connecting them to resources.
● Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage time and prioritize tasks.
● Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present to internal and external colleagues and explain complex elements in easy-to-understand language.
● Resiliency in reading and listening to difficult stories of discrimination and hate.
● Flexible self-starter, able to work independently and take initiative.
● Collaborative, supportive and respectful teammate, willing to pitch in as part of a small and nimble team.
● You thrive in a start-up environment, and you navigate ambiguity and unpredictability with initiative and good humor.
