Project Manager – Science of Sport Exhibition

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIO The California Science Center Foundation, the non-profit affiliate of the California Science Center is seeking a qualified Project Manager for the development of the temporary exhibition ‘Science of Sport’ (working title). Science of Sport will focus on the intrinsic relationship between science and sport. From the cutting-edge composite materials in racing bikes, to the gravity-defying physics of downhill skiing, to the transfer of energy in a golf swing…science empowers sport! Once complete, it is expected that this 8,000-10,000 sq. ft. exhibition will premiere at the Science Center in the spring of 2025 and remain on display for three years. There is a possibility that some modified version of the exhibition may tour following its initial three-year run.

Project Manager for the Science of Sport exhibition serves as an integral member of the exhibit project team helping to develop fun, educational, and memorable exhibit experiences supporting the Science Center’s mission to stimulate curiosity and inspire science learning in everyone. The Project Manager will lead the coordination of project stakeholder expectations, project scope, schedules, budgets, and other resource allocations to successfully develop the exhibit program. This work requires routine exercise of specialized knowledge, judgment, and discretion, and includes creative and innovative thinking, planning, and conceptualizing, decision-making and following through with minimal supervision. The position is funded for three years, with the potential for an extension pending further modification.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of three years of experience in project leadership, administration or management, and the successful completion of at least one major project, such as an exhibit, restoration, design-build, or other technical project.
  • Strong ability to conceptualize and develop project schedules, including defining major milestones and critical paths, for the successful completion of projects on time and on budget.
  • Ability to think creatively, solve unstructured problems, engage with new ideas with an open mind, and improve ideas based on constructive feedback from a diverse team of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing project management tools, techniques, and conventions.
  • Strong computer skills, including file sharing and project and task management software programs.
  • Strong skills in organization, coordination, communication, with a meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates a high level of professional integrity and builds trust on internal teams and with external contractors and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple project tasks simultaneously and work within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Background in museums or themed entertainment is strongly preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advises senior management and exhibit developers on project budgets, schedules, and contracts to meet the exhibition’s educational goals.
  • Develops and manages contracts, loan agreements and licenses related to assigned, active exhibit project(s), including but not limited to exhibit design, prototyping and fabrication, AV production, artifact/photo/video acquisition, installation, and evaluation.
  • Creates and manages project schedules including but not limited to exhibit development (exhibit research, content development, copywriting, etc.), production, and installation.
  • Manages and tracks exhibit budgets and expenses. Advises curatorial and senior management on budgetary issues related to all aspects of the assigned project(s).
  • Procures tools and materials for project teams, as needed.
  • Participates in the State procurement process as needed.
  • Proactively communicates project milestones with stakeholders inside of and outside of the department, coordinating with other project schedules as needed
  • Manages scheduling and coordination of advisor meetings, focus groups, and other events with external stakeholders.
  • Coordinates weekly meetings and proactively tracks project team action plans.
  • Coordinates communication with internal and external partners, including managing requests for proposals and contracts, as well as reviews and approvals during exhibit design, AV production, fabrication, and installation.
  • Oversees fabrication and installation and manages the exhibition punch list. Advises curatorial and senior management on installation issues affecting the on-time delivery of as-designed exhibits.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
