– Department of Surgery & Orthopaedics

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, our Manager, Research Operations, will lead, direct, and coordinate the Administrative, Operational, and Financial Functions for all research within the Departments of Surgery and Orthopaedics.

With responsibility for administrative oversight of both basic science and clinical research (including clinical trials), our Manager has a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Vice Chair for Research, as well as the Chair of Surgery and the Chair of Orthopaedics. 

Reporting to the Manager in support of this effort are three Program Managers, one Research Operations Associate, one Research Grants Specialist, a 0.50 FTE Administrative Assistant (shared with the Vice Chair for Research), and the clinical research team, consisting of a Clinical Research Specialist, two Clinical Research Coordinators, and two Clinical Research Associates.

The Manager will direct the department’s research efforts to successfully align with the following departmental and institutional strategic initiatives currently in effect:

  • Support and contribute to a level of research productivity that sustains and grows the revenue stream the departments currently generate for the system.
  • Manage resources prudently and maintain a solid budgetary posture consistent with institutional expectations for both the Departments of Surgery and Orthopaedics.
  • Continue to elevate current NIH funding ranking to the top 15, through targeted recruitments, faculty development and collaboration with the Cedars-Sinai research institutes and other programs.
  • Primarily focus on human factors in healthcare, urology (both benign and urologic oncology), stem cell applications (orthopedics and ophthalmology), advanced imaging, breast oncology, as well as next-gen ‘omics and informatics capabilities.
  • Further develop teaching programs that provide broad exposure to a diverse full-time, part-time, and voluntary staff.

Educational Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Health, Public Administration, or Healthcare Administration is highly preferred
  • Prior experience conducting research in a wet lab is also a plus

Experience:

  • A minimum of five to seven (7) years’ experience working in a collaborative and supportive fashion with M.D.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in research administration experience in an academic medical center or research institute is required.
  • A solid working knowledge of the financial and compliance policies and requirements of federal and non-federal granting agencies is required.
  • A high level of comfort with applicable software, and an ability to electronically produce financial and other metrics-based reports.

    (PeopleSoft, Epic, OnCore, etc.).

  • At least five years prior experience supervising staff with varying degrees of expertise; demonstrated experience as dynamic leader and mentor.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills coupled with outstanding organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • A strong customer-service orientation and the ability to instill that in others; a collaborative management style that builds teamwork and engenders high performance.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills; highly developed ability to communicate effectively with a variety of constituencies, manage challenging situations, and successfully negotiate solutions between parties with conflicting or opposing positions.

Physical Demands:

  • The physical ability and perceptive acuity to satisfactorily perform all direct and indirect patient care functions.
  • Must be able to perform assigned duties in a fast paced and demanding work environment.
