Hospital Laboratory Technician II, Part Time – Surgery

Responsibilities

UCLA Cardiothoracic Surgery seeking recent graduate for part-time position.

Assist in recovery of donor organs for transplantation.
Duties:

The preservationist ensures all necessary supplies are assembled for the recovery of hearts and lungs for transplantation.

Under the direct supervision of the procuring surgeon, the preservationist assists in the perfusion of donor organs in preparation for transplantation.

The preservationist is responsible for ensuring all necessary documentation is completed according to UNOS, and UCLA policy.

The preservationist collects and properly labels blood and tissue specimens for submission to the UCLA Laboratory.

The preservationist will assist in the coordination of the procurement with the recipient surgery by maintaining consistent communication with the UCLA Transplant Coordinator and the transplant recipient’s medical team.

Administrative duties include electronic data input, maintenance of supply inventories, development and institution of protocols in accordance with UCLA Transplant Services and UNOS, and training of new hires.

Qualifications

Required:
Working knowledge of the use, function, and operation of operating room equipment.
Working knowledge of anatomy and the correct terminology.
Knowledge of UNOS policy as related to organ procurement.
Ability to provide information, explain policies and procedures to team members.
Ability to speak, write and read English.
Work independently and follow through on all assignments.
Ability to move objects, such as heavy carts and handle surgical equipment safely.
Ability to work on call whenever assigned.
BLS certification
Bachelor’s degree, in Life Sciences (in progress acceptable).
Minimum of 1 year commitment
